J/35 North American Final Results

The 20th annual J/30 North Americans and the 15th annual J/35 North Americans were sailed September 17-19 at Annapolis Yacht Club in Annapolis, MD. The two classes raced on separate race courses with all social events held together.

The day before racing, with registration and measurement scheduled, Hurricane Floyd came roaring past the Chesapeake Bay. This caused boat measurements to be moved to Friday morning with Floyd had moved well into New England. Racing was postponed to Friday afternoon, and two races were completed for both classes by 5 PM. Winds were 15 to 18 knots from the northwest.

High pressure followed the hurricane, and light winds were the rule for the rest of the regatta. The J/35s finished three races on Saturday in winds that shifted from the NW to the SE and the J/30s completed two. Sunday  allowed two races for both classes, again in light SE winds.

The 24 boat J/35 class had competitors from the Chesapeake, New Jersey, New England, the Great Lakes and Puget Sound. The 31 boat J/30 class attracted boats from California, Long Island, Oklahoma, the Great Lakes and the Chesapeake.

The winner of the J/35 class was the Nickerson/Seniff team from Connecticut with Split Decision. Second went to Jim Nichols' Zorro, also from CT. Third was Frithiof and Jim Sagerholm's Aunt Jean from New Jersey.

In the J/30 class, the winner was Rich Harrison with No Respect, second went to the defending champion, John White sailing Jail Bait, and third was McGuirk/Dallam/Griff's Gunsmoke, all from the Chesapeake.
