My crew wants both of these - my plan was to put the spin sheet cleats on the bulkheads, just below the cabintop winches. With the compasses where they are, the port side cleat will line up very well, but the starboard side cleat will have to be at a funny angle to clear the compass.

I plan to put the twang cleat/fairleads on the cabin sides, all the way aft just before the bulkheads. This will be out of the way, but the twang lines might interfere with the genny cars depending on where they are set.

Just thought I woudl run this by the list in case someone has a better idea.

Thanks - Dan

Dan - Rhapsody spinnaker sheet routing described at this link.

There is a good discussion on twing locations at this link and this link.

This season I reran my twing controls back to the cabin top using a fairlead eye angled on the side of the cabin top just in front of the genoa track. There is a Harken 150 cam cleat on the port & stbd side near the secondary winches so the pit or cockpit crew can control the twings. I'll post pictures next time I get to the boat.

Forum research indicates some people are using the stanchion bases as attachment points for spinnaker twings. This set up would certainly make installment of the twings easy, but if it pulls up those stanchion bases and water gets in then it ain't worth it.

The bases should be strong enough ... based on 25 years of abuse on 505. I seem to remember that the outside edge is drilled through solid fiberglass. And most of the damage reports from other boats have the stantions blown by impact to pilings or boat to boat collision.

505 and 526 lead twings to cabin top about 1-2 in. from edge so can be adjusted by crew standing on steps or trimmers. Everything is lead back to that area on 505 and 526 ... pole lift and spin halyard can go back or not depending on the wind strength. Cunningham, vang, reef 1, and outhaul all go back to the cockpit.

Also in light air when spin has a lot of movement at clew ... slight tension applied to that twing stabilizes the spin breaking the tendancy to fly like flag. [beam reach]

I like the idea of cam cleats next to the compasses. 150s should do it.

Having been reassured of the strength of the stanchion bases I proceeded to rig up a set of spinnaker sheet twings. I lashed a block to the base of the stanchion just aft of the mast and another to the stanchion that is inline with the cockpit bulk head, this set up keeps the twing line close to the toe rail so it is not under foot. From the aft block the line runs across the side deck to a cam cleat that I mounted onto the lead car track (no holes in deck)at it's aft end. The set up looks good, we'll see how the road test goes.
