I got my main evaluated by North and they say its a ticking time bomb. A 1994 Pentax woven main and is quite yellowed. Looks physically to be intact but the UV damage is soon to show its ugly head. I would like to pick up a Dacron Main to get this rehab on the water again without having to break the bank on a new main. Anybody have a pretty fair one they are replacing? ddking3070@sbcglobal.net 248-701-5641 Don

1. is it showing any signs of seams coming apart? 2. or signs of rupture at the luff and clew reinforcing patch?
You will be really surprised how long some of these sails last before they actually fail.... and then continue to work in a somewhat less effective way.
North considers anything not in competitive racing condition ... a timebomb.
Imagine that yellow a nice Patina ....similar to what they work so hard on to achieve on a bronze statue.
But then again if you are going out on the lake in 25 mph winds ...

I may have some mains to sell-most with one season of use and still in good condition. I may be interested in selling my current main, used one season (NA winner) if I can get a new one quickly.

My main is 30 years old and so are my headsails. I think Sailmakers tend to have conservative estimates in the "timebomb" department. My loft reinforced the stitching on my 30 year old #1 and said he was amazed at how good the shape was still.
That said Steve, I might be interested in a used mainsail for the right price. I was saving for new, but if I can achieve partial results for significant savings then I am open to it.

In my opinion, this main is in good shape. I don't see the signs of it coming apart anytime soon. The yellowing(patina) is the only indication of its age and potential demise. This sail has sat in the bag since 2003 that I know and maybe longer. I believe it was made in 1994 by Doyle Boston. Previous owner said there were no battens. I found them under the setee. All that said, another main (used) a bit newer and since i am a PHRF racer, a tech main is an option, in the locker could be a comfort. There is no OD in Lake St Clair anymore.
