J/30 Sailors,
It was great to meet everybody last Thursday. I want to thank all who attended and helped kick off our planning efforts for the 2008 J/30 North American Championship. Mark Rotsky kept the minutes for us which are pasted below (Thanks Mark). Additionally, you will find attached to this email the following documents:
1. J/30 SNE Fleet List with contact information for everyone (Adobe PDF File) - send Bill Kneller an email with any corrections
2. 2008 North American Planning committee list with people who volunteered & committee responsibilities (MS Word File)
3. Master planning schedule leading up to the North Americans - each committee will review and update as appropriate. This MS Excel file also has a tab with potential event sponsors
We missed those who were not able to make the meeting. There are still plenty of opportunities to volunteer and help with any of the committees. If you aren't listed below to help out on a committee, please send me an email and let me know which committee you'd like to help with. Finally, We're looking for someone who is web development / HTML savvy to build some web pages for the SNE District.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Bill Kneller

3) Report from J/30 Governors Meeting held in Annapolis 28 September 2007 presented by Bill Kneller
- V-Berth cushions: A proposal was made to make these optional for racing since many want to keep them dry. This is a no-cost option that most felt would be beneficial. Some comments were made that this might start a trend for other such changes that would be detrimental to the class. This would be worked and proposed as a rules change to be voted on at the next meeting.
- Alternate Rudder Source: John McArthur brought a sample rudder that was fabricated from templates and build by another source than TPI. It was lighter, but otherwise identical to a
J/30 Class rudder. There was a discussion on what the proper weight should be, and if there was any advantage to having a lighter rudder. Weight could be added in the construction process if needed. The action was to have a Naval Architect contacted to determine what the issue was relative to the weight. Once determined, a rudder specification and alternate source of supply could be identified and approved at the next meeting.
- Stove Replacement: Based on the significant forum discussion before the 2007 North Americans, it was determined that a rules change was in order to determine the stove requirements. Discussions included a functional replacement 'weighted' to achieve an equivalent of 18 pounds in the same location as the original stove, to eliminating the stove as an outright requirement. It appears that the stove will be eliminated. A formal rules change will be voted on at the next meeting.
- 2008 J/30 North Americans: The proposal for
Bristol Yacht Club to host the 2008 North Americans 19-21 September 2008 was approved.
4) Establishment of 2008 J/30 North American Championships Planning Committees:
The Committees' roles and responsibilities were outlined and committee heads and volunteers were listed as follows:
Regatta Executive Committee; Lead - Bill Kneller with other Committee Leads
Regatta Race Committee; Lead - Mark Rotsky, with Charlie Stoddard, Bob Rude, Mike Campbell, Cory Butlin, Katie Healey
Logistics Committee: Lead - Roger Carney, with Chris Healey, Kathy Rotsky
Communications Committee; Lead - John Howell, with Warren McAuliffe
Finance Committee; Lead - John Howell, with Bill Kneller
External Support Committee; Lead - Pat Kelty, with John Cavanagh, Koos Luow, Arthur Smith
Notional execution schedules were proposed for consideration and example, and more detailed discussions of the concerns and priorities of each committee were reviewed. The need for a fleet Webmaster was identified but no firm suggestions for qualified people were offered. Members agreed to continue to consider possible candidates over the next few weeks.
5) Narragansett Bay One Design tune-up race opportunities:
Various NBYA races were discussed as potential fleet races for 2008 in preparation for the North Americans. As the winter progresses, and the Narragansett Bay club schedules come together, better visibility of the opportunities will be available. This effort will be continued in future meetings. The participation of Roger Carney will be very helpful in the development of schedules due to his insight as NBYA Administrator. It was a general consensus that single day "tune-up" races would be preferred to entire weekend races. Saturday would be the preferred day so boats could travel on Friday, race Saturday and return home on Sunday. Preliminary dates identified for these races are 21 June (
Bristol YC hosted), 19 July (
Barrington YC hosted), August (TBD in Newport Area)
6) North American Championship participants;
It was reported that between those committing to race, there are upward of 20 boats that may participate from the district. A discussion on loaner boats was also held. This will continue to be nurtured by the Executive Committee and all racing members.
7) Open discussions about Fleet Dues, Class rules, and schedules.
- John Howell sent in a report that indicated the SNE District has $1,280.00 in an existing bank account. There was no decision reached on the payment of dues for the SNE Fleet since the only expenses anticipated will be associated with planning the 2008 North Americans. Everyone was reminded of the
J/30 Class Membership/dues requirement to participate in the North Americans.
- Opportunities for group sail purchase were reported with John Howell providing an email indicating he was obtaining quotes from local sail makers. John will distribute this information for those interested.
- Discussion on the opportunities for J/30s cruising the area, and participating in PHRF races was held.
- Discussion on J30.org website and forum. Lots of great help and information out there.
- Discussion on Class Rule for Helmsman (para 6.6) was held. There was some confusion so Mark Rotsky agreed to review this and present it in a manner that meets the rule requirements and allows for maximum participation within the intent of the rule.
- Discussion on what the "amateur" versus "professional" crew requirements was held with a general lack of understanding. Mark Rotsky will clarify this for the upcoming North Americans.
- The number of crew and crew substitution for the North Americans was discussed with a lack of understanding from those who had not been involved before. Mark Rotsky will make sure this rule is clear for the upcoming North Americans.
- Discussion was held on the SNE District qualifying requirements for the North Americans. Consensus was reached that any SNE District boat that met the J/30 National Class rules for participation in the North Americans would be eligible to race.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm. The next meeting will be scheduled at a later date.
