I need a Prop Strut for my 1979 J30, Hull #25. I have been told that there are several different struts that were used on the J30's over the years, so I need to be sure that I find one that will fit my boat.
Can you let me know what the bolts look like when they come out and if you can tell how they are mounted in the hull? Mine is loose and I am debating drilling all the way through the hull and mounting a metal plate with nuts on the inside.
if you decide to reinforce using a backing plate ... I suggest G10 as an alternative to metal. Doing a quick grind and epoxying the g10 inside the hull before redrilling. This will give a pretty solid base for the strut.
I'm thinking that in construction they attached the strut bolt nuts on the inside ... and then ran a layer of thickened resin over the area to "seal" it? Let us know if this guess is close when you get there.
