It is that time of year to talk about possible rule changes to be discussed at the next BOG meeting.

In 2009, we implemented a provisional rule to restrict advertisement. You can find the details in this thread.

This topic is the official means of discussion relative to the class position on advertisement. Here are options: (1) Continue to restrict advertisement with the exception of regatta sponsorship. The class would have to propose a rule change with nomination and approval by the BOG.

or

(2) Allow advertisement. ISAF and US Sailing R.R.S. is expected to make the default to allow advertisement. As such allowing the current provisional class rule to expire will accomplish the goal.

Please let's hear everyone's opinion on this matter.

Dave

Thanks for posting this Dave.

Just so everyone is aware, there will be a vote on this at the BOG meeting that will be held at the NAs in October 2012. The class has been covered under a transitional period that expires at the end of 2012 in the ISAF rules, that kept the old "Class A" no advertising allowed. If the class does nothing, the Class rules being silent mean that the J/30 Class goes from not allowing advertising to allowing advertising automatically.

This is a significant change and we want to make sure your voice is heard. Discuss this in the forum here, and express your desires to your district governor.

Anyone have some good pros and cons? My initial reaction is that I am not against Advertising. Helps owners pay the bills and makes things much more colourful.

Permitting advertising, in my estimation, would have the same effect as the Supreme Court ruling in Citizen's United. Any sailor with close connections to the sailing industry would be underwritten by someone in the industry. Let's see. A boat plastered with Algrip logos on the hull, North or Quantum sail logos much like Puma and the other Volvo Racers now have on their sails, bottoms done by Waterline, all safety gear from West Marine, etc. If the class is truly serious about one-design sailing (and hence, keeping sailing costs within reason), it would seem that advertising should be prohibited or restricted. My sailing friends who are in the marine industry already gain insider advantages by swapping services, etc. Do we want to continue to encourage this type of behavior on a grand scale?

Mmmmm

but we do like the idea of the hooter's spin .... mmmmmmmm

In Newport we take for granted signs of every kind on many of the racing boats. and since the "serious" ODers seem to have to have new sails every year ... even the slightest kick in could be nice.

Advertising in moderation is good.
I am in favor of it. It helps pay for events and promotes the sport in the community.
The size of advertising should be restricted to the lower panel of the main below the reef a on the bow no further aft then the end of the pulpit.

This would keep the people who go crazy under a bit of control.

We all have advertising on our boats. Just look at the logo on your sails.
Even my #5 or floper stopper has a big logo on it. So much so that when UK came to measure my boat they said they would send me a new UK one so I could take down my north one.

Advertising helps with the costs so it's good. And that's my call
