Having ripped my reserve spinnaker to shreds recently, I may be forced to buy another one...

Did get a quote today, but interestingly the quote listed the sail area as 674sq ft. Spec is 704 sq ft. Anyone have recent experience with this?

Can't explain, but if it makes you feel any better our last two kites were both quoted as 638 sq ft.

North Sails New Orleans, has S2 Spinnaker Runner 704 Sq ft. AirX 650 for only $2684, it also includes sail numbers and turtle bag.
With J/30 National coming up they are offering "Double-Up or Buddy-Up" Promotion, buy one sail at retail and the second sail of equal or lesser value would 50% off; or Two sailors each buy a sail & get 20% off each sail. (July 15,2012 to August 31, 2012).
The local sailors here are taking advantage of this promotion.

I'm now told that the prior diagram should have run to 704 sqft per OD ... by North.

In other words ... you have to double check everything when it comes to sails.

So OK ... I asked to get up a bit in sq ft. and this is the second quote on a .5 spin I was looking for.

the specs of the ISP and SPL are fixed ... but I expected somehow that the luff length would change ... but no.

How can there be such a difference in area
Aren't the numbers fixed based on the rig design
Can you put up more cloth and still fit inside the numbers and how

Spinnaker sail area is not controlled since there is flexibility on the shape. Leach length is specified as is maximum half width. It isn't really a triangle but has 3 sides that don't have to be straight lines. See class rules below.

5.12.6 Spinnaker

5.12.6.1 Minimum cloth weight is 40 grams or 0.75 oz. nominal and 0.9 oz. actual weight. Spinnakers must be made of nylon. Airex 650 is one of several approved spinnaker cloths that meet this requirement.

5.12.6.2 The maximum length of the leaches is 10.515 m. The half width at half height, measured from midpoint of the leaches to the nearest point on the centerfold shall not exceed 3429 mm (11.25′). The foot shall be contained by a 110° angle from the clews. Maximum spinnaker half width at any point on the luff shall not exceed 3429 mm.
