SO OK ... we had a terrific weekend J30 regional regatta between Gould Island and Jamestown.

Vee Jay, as the J30 at host NYC, raced in cruising mode ... roller furling, Tides-marine sail track, and 155 genny.

I've come to the conclusion that we were competitive only against Good News ... when Good News was using a #2 genny in ~15 kts of wind on Sunday.

At which point that test was decided by crew errors on each boat.

other than that, in light wind on Saturday, the entire fleet easily wiped us out ... although naturally with OD spin up we do seem to be ~ close. which logically would be the case.

well this is very informative... As I get lazier with old age, I find myself wondering what if I was to install a roller furler and main sail track. I love how easy it makes things. But if you really think it was that noticable, I'll hold off another decade or two...

Correction ... actually Good News was using a #3. and Vee Jay was a bit overpowered as we had traveller problems and couldn't twist off enough. Hey while you're under 60 OD is probably just right if you spend most of your time racing.

Kudos to the organizers and participants for this well attended regional event.

I dunno Mike-the skipper/owner of Arbella seems to be ageless, races extremely well-and also cruises his boat post regatta. WITHOUT roller furling (although I do believe he has a cruising main with slides and lazy jacks).

Great thanks to the SNE district for organizing this great regatta. Great, challenging conditions, well set courses, and a very friendly place to sail. I hope this becomes a regular SNE NA off year event. Special thanks to Bill Kneller for working hard to build a solid, sizeable and competitive fleet. Not a bad turnout for a 33 year old racer cruiser!!
