This is probably old stuff, if it is just point me the right way. Removed the stainless boom vang fitting today, discovered that the galvanic action turned 50% of the wall thickness to aluminum oxide, and actually punctured the wall at the deepest point. What is the best class legal fix? Sleeve the boom with an aluminum section rivited to the boom, then re attach the stainless fitting?

A sleeve is the proper fix. Look on this Rig Rite web page for Vang Reinforcement Sleeve, Internal Stiffener 3' long K-11903E.

Hi Guys,
I recieved my Sleeve from RigRite today.
The sleeve is a half inch too small. I expected a close fitting sleeve. Has anyone else used this K-11903E sleeve?
I want to reinforce my boom at the vang. I don't see how this would help being so loose fitting. I could just use an aluminum tube stock instead of this for my $200.00. Let me know if I need to send it back to RigRite. They assured me it was for the old style boom, which I have. See photo.
Thanks

Interesting. I did notice RigRite mentioned that it is riveted along the bottom of the boom only. The needed increase in moment of inertia achieved should not matter whether the side walls are touching. Perhaps having an air gap between the walls would be a good thing from a corrosion perspective? I'll let the group know what I receive when mine arrives.

Conundrum: Did you try putting the sleeve to on the inside of the boom? Oh, sorry, I misunderstood the picture--I thought the black was the insert and white the boom. Looks like you figured it out and ignored my inane comment.

We have a similar sleeve inside our boom though not the one from Rig-Rite, just something a rigger put together. Attached with about a dozen rivets and has been great thought.

Boom Repair Update.
As I displayed previously, the new sleeve was a good deal smaller than I anticipated. I was hoping to have to use lubricant and tools to get it into place.
When I saw how much smaller the sleeve was I was flabergasted. With the distance from the side walls being 1/4 in on each side I was affraid that the internal outhaul system might jam in the gaps. Additionally, I will have to remove the rivets holding the vang connection in place and thought that NO Way would I get the rivets to pull the sleeve out to the boom sides. So I called RigRite and told them I was unhappy and they suggested that the Sleeve was meant to be adjusted as needed.
So, I took out the wedge and blocks and the pursuader and went to work.

After several passes up and down the sleeve, I am now satisfied with the new shape.

I am now confident that the rivets will set and the sleeve will be retained in position as desired. There will be 6 rivets at the vang attachment, 3 machine screws at the Kicker attachment and 6 more rivets along the bottom to secure and spread the shock loads of the boom. Up to now I have been reluctant to use vang sheeting in any more than moderate winds. Haven't any others used this stiffener to reinforce your booms?

Now I am ready to remove the hardware to install the sleeve. Anxious to see what mine looks like under the vang tab. I'll share the results.

Hey Don,
You are two weeks ahead of me. I feel much better now. What size rivets are your using?? 3/16th by how long?? I assume you are treating the aluminum with zinc chromate to avoid the corrosion issue I faced??

Thanks!

Art,
I had not thought about any coatings but once I remove the vang tab, I will see if it is advised. Being a fresh water boat, we don' think about that here. I will look into that though.
As for rivets 3/16 x 1/4 or 5/16 should do it now that I have a snug fit.
Now I need a little bit more nice weather to get it done before the snow flies.

I lost a boom 3 years ago. When I removed the hardware to set up the new tube, The only bad corrosion was under the vang attachment, where it broke. All the other fittings had lanocoat under them. It kept out the corrosion between stainless and aluminium. By the way, This boat has been in salt water all of its life.

Looked up the Lanocote, Looks like very cheap insurance. I will do it. Measured the thickness of the two parts at 5-6mm. So I will use 3/16 x 3/8 SS Rivets.
