Gents,
It's time to start thinking about summer sailing and for us on wildcat, to start planning our 2013 racing schedule.
Is anyone interested in trying to do a J/30 event this year.
I have a trailer so am more mobile than some. Any interest in
Mills Race, ILYA PIB regatta, Cleveland Race Week, O'Connel Fall Bay, Port Clinton Snow Flurries, or any other venue where we can get 5 or more J/30's on a starting line.

We've looked at that race (Bayview OD) and would consider it if there were enough boats to qualify for a one design event.
My trailer is available if it would make a difference for someone else to join in.
We'll be doing the Mills - Governor's Cup Course

In addition to Wildcat, I'm told that both Sand Dollar and Connundrum are doing the Mills race this year. Any chance we can get two more boats?
Brett - any chance you can come out and play this year?

Brett wants to come out and play....anyone want to sell a used #1. My 1981 dacron panel cut probably won't make it 5 miles past the start. SInce this will be my first year racing the boat I don't want to invest much into new sails under I know the boat a little better. Let me know if you have any leads......

Cheers

There are 4 J/30's entered in the 90th running of the 2013 Mills Trophy Race (June 7). Boats include Sand Dollar, Conundrum, Talisman (now renamed The Gambler) and wildcat.
This race is one of the oldest races on Lake Erie and usually draws in around 140 boats. There are 3 different race courses running 70, 54 and about 35 miles
The four J/30's will be on the 54 mile, Governor's Cup course - so far about 30 boats are registered this year for the Governor's cup course. In the past,in this event, wildcat won its class three years in a row and two years ago took overall as well.
The boats will race PHRF; some may carry different ratings due to differences in headsail, spinnaker and pole length.
Regardless, it's a start at getting J/30's out racing each other

It wasn't the prettiest performance by the J/30's but we managed to have 3 boats racing togther on lake Erie.

Of the four boats registered to race only three were able to make the starting line. Brett Longolf's boat lost it's drive shaft on the delivery transport and he was unable to get repairs in time to make the start.

This year's race was sailed in light and shifty winds (first leg was lumpy seas, 5-8k winds oscillating through 50 degrees) UGH. Second long leg was a reach that was marginal for a kite with winds forward of 90 degrees. We wrestled with whether to fly the a-kite as ours is smaller and not real effective in lighter air. We struggled with our all purpose kite and finally swithched to the a-kite.

I won't bore anyone with the rest of the details of our 55 mile race other than to say we did manage to find the rocky bottom of the lake off of a small island. Fortunatley the wind was light, we were going slow and we managed to free ourselves without doing any damage to the boat.

The three J/30's ended up as follows
Sand Dollar took 4th in class, Wildcat 6th and Conundrum 7th. Congrats to Dale for outsailing the rest of us.

The good news is that a group of J/30 sailors got to meet, greet and get to know each other a little better. We're hoping this is the beginning of more events where the boats are sailing together.
