Hi,
We sailed our new J30 last night for the first time.
Wednesday night PHRF race. All 8 of us loved it.
I swear you could carry 10 people if you wanted to on this boat.
Beautiful boat, but the main...not so much.
Can people share what they have spent on new Dacron mains?
Hope that isn't too uncouth to ask.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris:

I can't comment on the cost of a new main but I can tell you that the last main I bought I had four full length battens installed and slides on the luff. Here on Narragansett Bay, we get some 20+ wind days and the full length battens really help the sail hold its shape when it blows. I also had it made a bit heavier so it would last. The sail doesn't invert and doesn't flog itself to death. The sail is awesome and still looks great after a number of years. We have great boat speed against other J30s so I can't see any downside. I've got a call into my sailmaker so I can tell you the fabric we used as soon as he calls me back.

By the way, I'm going to be in Hayward, WI this summer in early August. If you're looking for someone to go sailing with, I might be able to swing up to Duluth...providing the iceflows are gone!

Best wishes.

No promises on the ice! Get ahold of us in August.
Thanks for sharing about the main.

Chris:

My sailmaker just called back. I bought the sail in 2005 with double reef points, full battens, draft stripes, numbers, cunningham cringe, etc. I don't remember the price but the material is called Contender Max Pentax. I love the sail. Bulletproof. It has the same shape as when I bought it.

Hi Chris, I have Toy Box, hull 324 down in New Orleans and also work at North Sails down here. We have built the winning J/30 Mainsail Design for many years as Zephyr has won Nationals five years in a row and can build one for you also. I just put one on my boat just a few months ago. The Sail looks great and is fast. A Standard Mainsail built from our North Nordac ND78HA sail cloth.

That's a fair price, similar to our North main ordered at Annapolis Boat show and delivered April 2011. Though quoted as Nordac my local sailmaker said he used Contender 7.52 oz. Still looking good after 46 races.

Not sure there is a need for a country codes since J/30 is not an ISAF international class.

I like having USA's on the main. North does it automatically here in NPT. I don't think you get a discount to not have them on.
