I spent to weekend with the Barrington Yacht Club Race Committee during NAs. They did an awesome job calling charlie flags on both ends of the course - setting square lines and gates. The distance of each race balanced with the winds was perfect. The number of races per day allowed us to reach our national goals. As well they took a photo of the results with an iPhone after each race. We posted the results online within 5 minutes of scoring.

I would like to nominate the BYC Race Committee to win the US Sailing St. Petersburg trophy. If you were a skipper of crew, please respond to this thread as I want to send a letter to US Sailing with a recommendation and recognition of this outstanding volunteer service in the Sport of Sailing. Please give us feedback. Thank You!

J/30 Skippers and crews,

I sent a blast email to the skippers that can be forwarded to the crews. There is a Word document in Dave's post above that skippers can use to provide input to nominate the Barrington YC race committee for the US Sailing St. Petersburg trophy. Please email that to Dave.

Additionally Dave and I want separate feedback (informal email to Dave & Bill, or post on this forum thread) on what worked well and what can be improved for planning future North American Championships. Don't limit this to on water stuff, but consider everything leading up to the event too so we can make future events better for the skipper's and crews, and get more people to the starting line!

Feedback from a loaner perspective.

I would never have considered investing the money nor the time to align a team on this year J/30 NA championship. Still I was missing the team one-design racing. Lending Footloose to the Rocket J team proved to be both rewarding and cost effective.

A few aspects of the 2013 NA made this easy:
  • The schedule: making appropriate to piggy back the delivery with a mini-cruise.
  • The Rocket J team. From the very start - much prior the event - the team welcomed me as if I was an old crew member. During the event, both my wife and me were warmly welcomed. Prior meeting the team when discussing with Catherine our stay in Barrington, I had some concern being stranded with no car far from home. The Rocket J team can rightfully laugh at me for those thoughts.
  • Insurance. BoatUS covered with no hassle the event, but knowing through Bill Kneller, that the J30 organization has backup-plan for insurance - allowed for an early anxiety-free decision. Also Randy made it clear he will not put the boat at risk.
  • Mooring accommodations. The Barrington yacht club made it dead-easy to secure a mooring, serviced by launch right at the step of the club - making easy access to shower and easy to stay in phase with all the NA activities.
  • Delivery. The J/30 association, specifically Bill Kneller and Vic Farmer made delivering the boat to an unknown place easy, sharing both their knowledge of the area, precious resources (moorings, backup vhf etc...) and their time.
  • Spectator boat. The ability to share the event with your close one especially when she is a main stake holder in your recreational time and the boat.

Thanks a lot to the Rocket J Team, the J/30 association and the Barrington Yacht Club.

Georges (Rocket J #524 for this NA)

I've worked with many loaner owners over the years hosting in Annapolis and been a loanee in Newport, at Bridgeport, and Miami. It's one of the unique and rewarding aspects of sailing in the Class championship. Georges glad to hear you had such a good experience and a credit to your efforts and those of the organizers and host club.
