BOG Phone Conference Meeting Agenda annotated with discussion notes:

1. Brief update by each of District Governors
  • Southeast - Graeme Nichol reported that a number of boats had been bought and sold in the district but there wasn't much J/30 organized activity the past year.
  • Carolinas - Randy Boyles provided an update with the Rocket J participation at the NAs with loaner boat Footloose. There hasn't been OD racing in the Carolinas but they are maintaining contact with the J/30 owners to keep interest up. Carl Sherter reinforced Randy's comment about the loaner boat experience being a good way for learning and connecting with the great people.
  • Chesapeake - Pam Morris reported that there has been good participation in the Annapolis Weds. night racing. The Chesapeake district is also willing to host the NAs in 2015.
  • Southern New England - Mark Rotsky reported that the SNE district is hosting the 2013 NAs, and the fleet is continuing to get stronger. There have been many boats bought and sold with some coming and going with a net change of about the same number of boats in the area. The SNE district will hold a regional event in 2014 similar to the successful 2012 event. This will be used as a "feeder" leading up to the NAs at Cedar Point YC.
  • Gulf Coast - Dave Erwin reported that the Gulf Coast held the NAs in 2012 that was a rebuilding event for the fleet. The event helped get 9 - 11 local area J/30s more active. There are 2 woman owned J/30s with the GYA Womans regatta won by Debbie Grimm on "Hot Chocolate". OD racing continues to be good on Lake Ponchartrain.
  • Long Island Sound - Carl Sherter and John McArthur reported that Cedar Point YC held a OD regatta with 80 boats that included a J/30 class. The OD regattas need support and boats out of district would help. A number of boats were sold with 5 remaining at CPYC. Hurricane Sandy took its toll on J/30s in NY and NJ.
2. Class Association finance status & overview (Carl Sherter & Bill Kneller)
Account Balances as of 30 June 2013
  • PayPal - $1,944.69
  • Checking - $11,211,33
  • Savings - $12,151.78
  • Total All Accounts - $25,307.80

$25,307.80 includes district funds in accounts:
  • SNE - $13,618.43
  • Gulf Coast - $200.00
  • Chesapeake - $325.00
  • J/30 Class - $11,164.37

Outstanding bills $1,600.00 for 2013 NA Trophies
SNE account includes 2013 NA registrations collected to be reconciled with bills paid after the event.
3. Future dates for J/30 North American Championships

Discussions on locations for future NAs and the resulting vote for 2015 and beyond is as follows:
  • 2014 Cedar Point YC - Wesport, CT (11-14 Sept)
  • 2015 Northern New England district to host - potentially Hull YC - date TBD
  • 2016 Chesapeake district - date and club TBD
The potential for the Great Lakes (East or West) to host in 2017 was discussed. The suggestion is they should demonstrate organizing and holding a regional regatta during 2014 and 2015 to show that there is a critical mass of J/30s that can be attracted in the area.

4. Election of Class Officers

President - The President shall be Chief Administrator of the Class, and shall appoint a Secretary and others to assist him.
  • Class President - Bill Kneller was elected as J/30 Class President.
The BOG vote confirmed the following appointments by the Class President
  • Secretary - Dave Erwin
  • Treasurer - Carl Sherter
  • Chief Measurer - Charlie Stoddard
The at large members (Dennis Bartley and Bob Rutsch) will remain on the BOG.

5. Report from Class Measurer - Charlie Stoddard

Nothing to report.

6. New Business
  • A motion passed that the Executive Board confirm the US Sailing Burgee Program cost and establish a policy that would cover loaner boats for J/30 Class regional and national events.
  • A perpetual sportsmanship trophy was being initiated by the Southern New England district and provided to the J/30 Class that could be awarded annually to a class member. The criteria is purposely not specific to allow maximum flexibility by the board in determining the circumstances to make the award. Thanks to Charlie Stoddard for creating a trophy that has part of a varnished tiller handle attached to it. The initial award was made to John Howell "Good News" for his persistence and continued support for the J/30 Class.
