BOG Phone Conference Meeting Agenda annotated with discussion notes:

1. Brief update by each of District Governors
  • Southern New England - Mark Rotsky reported that the SNE district had a good year but regatta participation was smaller than last year. The SNE Region Open Regatta held with 10 boats racing resulted in the top spots being won by boats from outside Narraganset Bay. There was a good dinner held and the costs for participants was held to a minimum to make it affordable for any boat to participate. The SNE annual meeting was held in April at the North Sails loft in Portsmouth, RI. There was good participation from people all over the district. The SNE District is planning to hold its annual regional open regatta hosted by Barrington YC the third week in July 2015.
  • Long Island Sound - John McArthur reported that Raritan Bay now has 5 or 6 boats with J/30 participation in this area on the rise. Cedar Point YC is hosting the 2014 NAs and held a OD regatta that attracted over 100 boats including the J/30 class with six J/30s. Unfortunately the Amtrack Railroad bridge malfunction kept one of the boats from getting to the regatta. The OD regatta needs support and boats out of district would help - an invitation was extended to everyone. The 2015 Cedar Point OD Regatta will be held the weekend after Memorial Day.
  • Carolinas - Randy Boyles provided an update that not much had transpired since last year. J/30 Grits has been relocated from the Gulf Coast to the Carolina coast with hopes that there may be a chance to get another J/30 in the area racing. Randy would like Rocket J to participate in the 2015 J/30 NAs and discussed the need for a Dacron main for the regatta. Charlie Stoddard commented that we should work to try and make competitive class legal sails available to help loaner boats at future NAs.
  • Gulf Coast - Casey Grimm reported that the Gulf Coast has 5 active J/30s on the South coast and 6 on the North coast of Lake Ponchartrain. The next regional event should have good participation. Zephyr V2 is leading the PHRF series. Casey indicated that Hot Chocolate has done some coastal cruising and Debbie Grimm was top overall in the "GYA Trilogy" of three woman's events including Fast Woman, Bikini Cup and Race for the Roses.
  • Western Great Lakes - Dennis Bartley reported for Dell Todd that there were a few boats racing in the Eastern area with two boats active in Chicago and two in the Milwaukee area.
  • Eastern Great Lakes - Dan Mather reported that there were now four J/30s located in Oswego. There was a OD class start with five J/30s at the Sail Oswego Regatta, but most of the district racing is PHRF.

There were no reports received from the following districts: Northern New England, California, Pacific Northwest, Southeast
2. Class Association finance status & overview (Bill Kneller)
Account Balances as of 3 September 2014
  • PayPal - $2,434.23
  • Checking - $1,541.98
  • Savings - $12,005.55
  • Total All Accounts - $15,981.76

$15,981.76 includes district funds in accounts:
  • SNE - $5,205.69
  • Gulf Coast - $80.00
  • Chesapeake - $475.00
  • J/30 Class - $10,221.07
All bills are paid except for the 2014 NA trophies ($1,600 due) including the J/30 Class Burgee insurance policy. Details for the financial status with a Quicken report is included in the Board of Governors section on the J/30 Forum.

3. Future dates for J/30 North American Championships
  • 2015 Northern New England District - Beverly YC, Marion, Mass 17-20 September
  • 2016 TBD dates & location Chesapeake District
  • 2017 and 2018 Discussions held with potential locations offered including the Gulf Coast - New Orleans YC, SNE District - Narragansett Bay, LIS District - Raritan YC and Eastern Great Lakes - Oswego YC.

Note: Subsequent to the BOG meeting we were contacted by the Beverly YC indicating that a conflict came up for the 2015 date, so the dates have moved from 17-20 Sept to 24-27 Sept.

    Action Assigned:
  • Bob Rutsch took the action to get the dates and host club for the 2016 Chesapeake district NAs firmed up no later than 30 December 2014 so the information can be posted on the class website.
  • Dan Mather will host a teleconference meeting by 30 January 2015 to follow up on the results of those offering potential locations for hosting the 2017 North American Championship. All districts offering to host in 2017 and potential for 2018 need to do their homework and be able to report back for the phone conference to be scheduled so a decision can be made.
  • Dan Mather will have Oswego YC organize a regional open regatta with loaner boats in 2016 as a trial for 2017. This will be open for participants from outside the district.
  • Bill Kneller will post on the forum the Request for Proposal (RFP) and process used by the SNE district to select the host club for the 2013 NAs.
4. Report from Class Measurer - Charlie Stoddard

There were no pressing issues. Charlie will look at the measurement checklist used at the NAs and make any adjustments needed to simplify and remove confusion.

5. New Business

Casey Grimm suggested that the class look at the 0.5 ounce spinnaker as a class sail in order to be competitive in PHRF racing. There was some discussion on the pros (improved light air performance) and cons (expense of an extra sail) during the meeting. Rod Johnstone indicated he was not in favor using the 0.5 ounce spinnaker for one design racing.

Casey Grimm took the action to post on the J/30 Forum so that the class could discuss openly the pros and cons, then a decision could be made by future vote on whether the class should include the 0.5 ounce spinnaker as part of the OD allowed sail inventory.

6. Election of Class Officers
  • President - The President shall be Chief Administrator of the Class, and shall appoint a Secretary and others to assist him.
Dan Mather and Dave Erwin were unanimously elected as J/30 Class Co-Presidents to serve the next two years.
  • Chief Measurer is appointed by Class President and confirmed by Board of Governors
Charlie Stoddard was appointed by Dan Mather and Dave Erwin to continue as Class Chief Measurer and was unanimously confirmed by the Board of Governors

Bill Kneller brought the meeting to a close and thanked all those on the BOG who he served with as President since 2009 and SNE district Governor in 2008. Bill noted the support of Rod Johnstone and J/Boats for the technical expertise and wealth of knowledge in helping the BOG make decisions. He also thanked J/Boats for their sponsorship over the years for the NAs and various district regattas. Bill acknowledged all of the previous class past presidents in the room including Dennis Bartley, Bob Rutsch, Carl Sherter, John McArthur, and Dave Erwin. The class is strong because of people like these who continue to serve and help the class.

Congratulations to Dan Mather and Dave Erwin as the incoming J/30 Class Co-Presidents. The class is in great shape with their leadership and ideas.
