Has anybody added a cockpit coaming to the older cockpit design? Being of strong mind and weak back I'm finding that sitting against the lifelines just isn't all that comfortable for day sailing anymore. I'm thinkin of addung something that can be leaned against or sat on for upwind and will leave the winches as original for one design.
Ideas?

I've been thinking of adding those soft, rolly, lifeline cover things to lean against. And yes, I do believe that's the technical term for them. Maybe easier than custom coaming fabrication?

Yeah....I used to have the soft rolly things (yes, that's the technical term) but they finally 'sploded. If I go back to those I think I'll find some kind of tough tubing to slide inside of those "Pool Noodles" and stitch up covering tubes...the lifelines cut up my originals. But if anyone had made some actual coamings I'd love to see their solution.

I don't know if you are aware that between model changes, some of the older cockpit configured boats had wooden cockpit combings. I think it was a J/30 option.
I've heard pros and cons to the design. Perhaps someone with the factory installed combings can send you a picture or drawings

As Russ said, some 400 series hulls, before the molded combing came out, had wood combings including if I recall correctly #421 Tippecanoe our loaner at the '97 NA's.

For comfort try a version of those 'soft rolly things' called 'Backsiders' from Standout Yacht Fittings. For a home made version use 1/2 PV/flexible Polyethylene tubing with Armacell/Armaflex pipe insulation and a fabric cover. Any shop that does canvas should be able to make them. Have also used hollow pool noodles in a pinch and they come in bright colors, though cheap as they are they won't last a season. If you race, put them on the lower lifelines in the middle for the crew to hike and on both lifelines in the cockpit for skipper and main trimmer.

Thanks Guys!
My old "Backsiders" finally died when the inner tube broke out and the lifelines shredded the foam. I'm in process of making some new ones with tougher inner plastic bits and thicker foam. We have a good all steel drive sewing machine and we use it a lot smile If someone has some pics of the pre-molded coaming I'd love to see one for ideas.
Thanks again,
:Doug
