Dave,

The easiest way is to buy the dual bayonet to G4 MR16 socket adapter available on ebay or various places.

You can then find the two pin MR16 base LEDs much easier and have a wider choice.

Here are some higher end solutions that work well.
SEN10W SCAD Sensibulb® LED Light - LED cabin light bulb replacement Made in USA
[Linked Image]

Marine Beam G4 LED BULB 6-LED SMD POWER CLUSTER BACK PIN NOVI - I use these on my J/109 - very bright and low power.

Another brighter one from the same Marine Beam source - 21-LED BACK-PIN G4 REPLACEMENT FOR 20W HALOGEN

You can also play with lower cost Chinese knockoffs but be careful, some use a dropping resistor that adjust the voltage rather than a switching converter. This creates heat and some end up smoking.

I just found these even cheaper ( Here ) for a 10 pack; any reason these wouldn't work? Another small project to add to the list that didn't get finished this spring...

Josh,

They should work. The ebay post doesn't show the back so it means these are probably using a dropping resistor and not a switching supply. Order them and report back what you find!

They arrived a few weeks ago and I want to replace them before I leave on an annual sailing cruise with a few old college chums. I went to replace them last week and, as it turns out, I don't know how to disassemble the cabin lamps! I didn't want to break anything by monkey fisting anything too hard, what's the procedure to replace the lamps with the new LEDs?

Thanks,

Josh

Josh,

On Rhapsody they were just open face fixtures. Push the old halogen bulb in and twist 1/4 turn counter clockwise. The springs on the socket were pretty tight.

Anybody hearing of RF interference from LED lamps? I just rad through an old copy of "Practical Sailor" (Sept 2014) and they mention if with some applications.

I had one bulb that caused a some white noise in the AM/FM stereo on the fixture near it on my J/109. Better shielding of the radio fixed the problem. There were two bulbs - red and white. Only the white bulb caused the noise.

I replaced every halogen bulb on the boat with LEDs. Current draw went from 16 amps to 1.5 amps with all lights on. The lights are the "warm" color like conventional bulbs and are brighter than the original.

Thanks for the help , the LEDs have been installed and seem to work great with the parts I detailed above.
