I am not yet a J-30 owner, but hope to be one soon. With respect to anchoring: The J-30 seems to be unique with it's starboard anchor well and it's forepeak rode locker. I understand the forward cowl vent/deck plate acts as sort of a hawse pipe. Seems to me if any amount of chain were to be lead in & out of there on a regular basis that the plastic ring would be damaged. Since I plan to do a lot of cruising with my J-30 I would like to hear from others about anchor deployment and any suggested modifications one might want to make to the J-30's standard "hawse pipe".
Thanks in advance, Mark

I have a shortish length of chain that stays at the bottom of the anchor locker itself, and 3-strand rode that's led into the forward rode locker through the hawse. But I only anchor for lunch really so I don't use that much chain rode.

Alx, What do you use to connect the chain to the 3-strand rode?

The rode should have a thimble and I keep a galvanized shackle on it with a piece of saftywire attached. Never use a shackle without securing it.

You can get the 90 degree rubber "hawse pipe" (I think it is just a vent) that fits into the deck plate. That protects the ring from the chain. I cruise with my anchor on a bow roller and the chain in the forepeak. When racing, it all gets disconnected and put in a bag down below.

During my deck overhaul I eliminated the deck anchor locker because I think it is stupid and makes regular anchor deployment a chain rattling, gelcoat damaging affair. Vastly more hanging locker space now too.

Natural High, When you have time, would you post a picture of your bow roller setup? This is definitely something I'd like to add to our boat to make cruising easier. thanks, Sam

The Nicro or Sea-Dog flexible cowl vent works for an anchor hawse pipe.

I forget if it is a 3" diameter or 4" diameter hole in the deck, but either is available.

That's the one!

I think I have posted the bow roller here. I will look around through posts. NH is currently being delivered to Victoria for the Swiftsure race so I can't go take a new one.

It isn't a strong design, but it does the job.
