Apparently in the older models, the forestay was connected directly to the box on the mast with a single pin; no toggle. Later a toggle was added. See http://j30.us/ubbthreads/ubbthreads...rig-rite-jib-box-assembly.html#Post11819 pictures of the different boxes with and without toggles..

Lack of a toggle seems like bad practice, although maybe the fitting at the end of the forestay can rock sideways enough on the pin. Otherwise one would expect fatigue from bending the wire sideways against the end of the swage fitting, or maybe bending the fitting itself.

At least one rig failure is noted with lack of toggle blamed. See http://j30.us/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/13778/re-forestay-pin-falling-out.html#Post13778

Have people been adding toggles when replacing forestays? I replaced the shrouds a few years ago as they were growing meathooks, but the forestay seemed fine, and it is pretty heavy wire for the load, so I didn't replace it. Anyway, if it breaks presumably the jib will hold the mast up long enough to get things under control. But that is not really an excellent plan. Thoughts?
