Hey everyone,
New to the world of the J30, I am the new owner of Hull 200, previously called Annick II. It is definitely a project now and pretty much a total refit. I am hoping to have her done by the end of the year and set up for the next racing season.

There is no OD class around where I will be racing and it uses the CSA rating system for handicap. What are some of the cons to the boat that could be corrected by upgrades/repairs/addons? Anything you would change if you were not racing in a OD box?

Check for core rot in the transom around the exhaust port. Pretty much all J30 have issues here. It spreads forward in to the hull on the starboard side.

And check the bulkheads where the chainplates mount.

Also core rot under winches, and around the anchor locker.

Those are the worst parts.

Recommend adding slugs to the mainsail luff.

Really needs a deeper keel and rudder. Other than that its a pretty awesome boat!

I will check the core rot in the transom, I have yet to tear into that area yet. I have a big core rot project on starboard side under the mid ship stanchion. It was not properly sealed and took out a good chunk of the hull.
I also have bow deck area rotted out a little bit due to the cleat not being sealed.

Anchor locker area is solid

Bulkhead around chainplates are also solid.

Starboard winches core is rotted a little bit, that has been removed already.

Will talk to my sail maker about adding slugs on the main.

Thanks for the notes on rudder and keel. I think the keel will stay the same way, not even sure how to lengthen one. I am thinking about making a balanced rudder that would be 16 inches deeper.

Also have a crushed core in spots under the sail tracks and some of them are corroded. Would replacing them with slightly longer ones gain anything?

Just tap around the exhaust port with a hammer. You will be able to hear the tone deepen if its rotted there. I had replace the core in this area. There is a guy on this forum “Rhapsody”. He gives great details on how to fix common problems. Very helpful.

I have heard about rot under stanchons, but they bolt thru solid fiberglass on this boat. The core in the deck and hull taper off to solid where the deck and hull bond together and the toe rail bolts on. Maybe the water intrusion source is from somewhere else?

The jib track is set up for the class 163% and the 140%. Shouldn’t need a longer track unless you are buying used sails from other boats.

For me the longer keel is a dream. Rod realized it was too small and added 6” to it on the J29. Just wonder how much better J30 would sail. Definitely not worth the change.

Thought about balancing the rudder, but I like how the tiller responds to sail trim upwind. The boat talks to you through the tiller. When the helm is neutral, she is in the groove. Its one of the things I love about the boat. But, It will build your biceps on a screaming reach. She tugs hard.

Ciao #282 was in very good condition but there is always more work to be done. I have a friend down in St. Croix and I just visit last year. He recently bout a Stiletto 27. Never know we can maybe meet up.

I ended up buying a part off a girl that had a totaled j30 in the BVI from the 2017 storms. I really don't think she has the hull and bulk of boat anymore but I can shoot her a message.

Corpus Christi is very windy USVI also has lots of wind. I ended up going with a furler and a new #3 headsail.

I am more familiar with my local PHRF and no nothing of CSA. The J/30 as designed in OD configuration takes a hit in my region and most others for having the #1 163% genoa in sail inventory(a 155% gives me no penalty and lucky enough one came with the boat). Also the OD spinnaker pole that is J+1 in length gives a handicap hit. The addition of the furler gives me a better handicap.

If CSA works like PHRF, I would just say to be sure of the sail and spinnaker pole limits within the CSA and reduce your rating if the OD configuration is making you take a hit.
