I am considering having my old 2GM (from 1984) - still loyal, but rusty, smoky, a bit oily - replaced by a 2YM15 on FootLoose a 1984 model. By a mechanics, not me. Anyone had done this already? Is it a drop-in replacement - mostly? (I have the dimension diagram for the 2YM15 - but could not yet put my hand on the 2GM ones...so will measure by hand...) Does it fit the original Kanzaki transmission? Any notion of the price?
Thanks!

Thanks so much Rob... super useful. Note - the J/30 84' variant dot not have this bulkhead. The engine as a whole is less accessible, but then, it has some pros :-)

Thanks Rob, With you on the accessibility aspect...although it only bites me when changing the oil - I need a long snake-funnel to fill it up...
Having photos of the installation on the 84+ vintage will surely make me less anxious - but then - not a showstopper for me nor anything urgent: your pics already gave me confidence I needed...
Thanks again.

Thanks Rob, yes I noticed... I might actually have to move my raw water strainer... will see. I do not expect everything to fit right in :-) But if the engine fits, the fixation fits, and the overall engine+transmission fits my old 2GM propeller shaft length and alignment - I will be happy :-)

Pictures and possibly the brand and model of the transmission ? at least if not the Kanzaki KMP2-1 shown in the 2YM15 Yanmar diagram with its dimension... Thanks again.

According to the Yanmar specs the Kanzaki KM2P-1 transmission fits both the 2YM and 2GM series and for the J/30 uses 2.62:1 gear ratio. When I had Rhapsody the 2GM raw water cooled engine had the oil filter on the port side. I've seen 2YM installations where a removable panel was installed on stbd side to easily access the oil filter. My J/109 with 3YM30 has a removable panel in the head just for that purpose. It's probably easy on the J/30 to use a scroll saw and make a cutout on the stbd side, then screw in a frame on the back to hold a piece of wood that would be removable for the oil change.

Thanks fcd, Thanks Bill,
I have some beginning of answers from Macboring which Yanmar seems to use for its customer service in the US. But still waiting for the drawing with dimension of the original 2GM+KM2A. I did measure over the week-end and found an exact match on the total length of engine+transmission and relative to silent-block attchement. So I am quite hopeful, but I am still a bit baffled of why the 2YM15+KM2P-1 would fit a J/30 model 79 and not a model 84. So your pic and model would help..
Regarding the propeler pitch adjustment if a KMP2P 3.22 was choose - it makes sense - but I intend to stay with the same ratio (2.62) as the original setup - as mentioned also Bill... Will update the thread when/If I managed to have the original 2GM+ KM2A drawings... Cheers,

Thanks B. more pics can not hurt, but I am not sure it will give me more info than what Rob's photos showed. The two open questions really are: * is the engine setup similar on the v2 of the J/30 (~1984 coaming, bigger cockpit - and bigger 1" propeller shaft). * how much drop-in is the replacement when you go with the full package (2YM15+KM2P-1). And picture might not be as helpful (considering of the so many dimension fits involved) than knowing someone that actually did it. But I am already greatfull for the feedback so far... At some point I have to go for it and see how it goes... :-)
