Are the wooden slots in the stern/quarter berths for structure or for looks? Majority of my wooden slots are rotted around the screws and showing black rot. Wondering if I should remove them and just fiberglass or epoxy the holes?

They are for looks. That black rot is probably rotten wet core and may require a more rigorous fix!
