As some know, during the 2022 J/30 NAs, Wildcat was badly damaged. We transported her home to Michigan and yesterday, the insurance adjuster examined the boat. I am awaiting the insurance decision on damage repair costs, etc.
When asked his opinion the adjuster said, due to the extent of the damage, most likely the boat will be totaled. If totaled, according to the adjuster, the insurance company will pay the market value of comparable boats.
I am seeking j/30 boat values. If you have one for sale or know of one sold in the last 2 years, please post a reply

Wildcat was the winner! What happened? I have never heard anything so sad.

Here is one for sale down the street from me: $29k

1980 J30

Race 3 of the first day; winds 20-25. Shortly after rounding the leeward gate, we were engaged in a port starboard incident.
It was a legitimate accident ( no one was trying to be daring). Wildcat was t-boned resulting in severe damage to deck, cabin top, boom, etc, etc. My crew and with the help of fellow competitors pieced the boat back together to allow us to sail on.

Nobody hurt? You went on to win the North Americans with a boat that was totaled on the first day? This has to be the biggest story ever. There should be coverage on ESPN, and a viral documentary to go with it. This is a YUGE accomplishment. You must have the best crew ever. If I was Rod Johnstone, I would give you a new J99! Very impressive.

If you don’t get a new J99, are y’all planning to repair Wildcat? She looks to be in excellent condition otherwise. I doubt you would get what you want from insurance. That’s usually a disappointment.

How well do you know Rod? I'd settle for a J88
And yes, I have a rock star crew. They and the folks at Eastport yacht club get all the credit for US Sailing on day 2 and 3

I met Rod once, he probably don’t remember me. Do you have a photo of the damage?

Wildcat was impressive, repairing the deck after a catastrophic collision, never finishing below third and winning the last two races. My hats off to Russ and his crew. If that was the final regatta for Wildcat, it certainly went out in style.

Last year Infectious Smile was T-boned in our final race of the season last year and totaled by the insurance company. The previous owner took the insurance settlement, sold remaining racing sails, and purchased a J/105. A local J/30 fleet member bought the damaged boat for salvage, repaired it, then offered it to Valhalla Sailing at his cost. They finished 7th in this year's NA's using a set of older sails.

So that settlement information may be helpful. A comparable to the condition of Wildcat sold recently would be Mayhem. I only have general and unconfirmed information so give you details but can help you get in touch with those involved if you like. I'm sure they would be willing to help.

Bob, thanks for the kind words. Coming from you, a significantly accomplished sailor and J/30 champion, that means a lot.

We have plans afoot to repair the boat. I may not be at the helm, but we expect the boat to be in Bristol.

This is an incredible story. Russ if you ever get the time to post about how you race the j30 would be very welcome. Tips you have learned along the way etc. I would find this a useful resource.
