I'm a new J/30 owner and am already frustrated with the poor quality companionway hatches. (I'm talking about the 2 boards not the overhead hatch, which slides nicely) Has anyone had these replaced and if so is there anywhere these can be bought "off the rack" or am I stuck with having these custom made.

I built two new plexiglass companionway pieces by going to a nearby plastics distributor and buying bronzed-colored plexiglass. I suggest you look at a new J/32 design and you'll see how mine came out. It's a great upgrade, inexpensive, and adds much needed light down below when it's cool in the spring or fall. I found that the J/32 design is much easier to build than the original teak trimmed units that came with the boat. If you don't have access to a J/32, send me your e-mail address to Goodreader@cox.net and I'll take some digital photos and send them your way.

Bob, I'd love to see some pics of a better arrangement for the J/30's companionway hatches. If you put them up on the web somewhere, this bulletin board software allows you to grab the picture from a linked source if you use the following syntax:
This would give everyone a chance to look at your handiwork!
