I've got something very similar to Option 2. It works great.

Scott - what are the specifics on how you transition from the block mounted on the backstay bridal to how you get the line routed to the base of the cockpit? I don't know if I could bypass the padeye blocks mounted on the stern and run the lines directly to blocks on the floor of the cockpit. Concern would be if the center of effort was too offset from the backstay bridal, or if the path of the lines would interfere with the tiller.

Stefan - If you don't have a photo site (like O-photo, Snapfish, etc.) email them to me and I'll post them. Bill

This is what Stefan sent from another J/30 setup:

The first drawing is almost the same as what I have except I have two fairleads on each side of engine control panel - as far out to the edges as possible (vs on top). This keeps the line as far back, and as wide as possible at the tiller.

David - That's exactly the info I needed. I'll mount fairleads aft on the cockpit vertical sides near the top horizontal surface to minimize interference with the tiller. I'll use option 2 (4:1) with a single block at "F" on the diagram and the fairlead replacing the E and half of F. The rest seems pretty straight forward with the cheek blocks and cam cleats.

Thanks,
Bill

Mine looks just like the one above. I haven't ever had a problem with the backstay in the way of the tiller, but I can see where it would be nice to keep the line as far aft as possible.

The setup works great. Either helmsman or main trimmer can adjust it easily.

Thanks to everyone who provided info. I went with "Option 2" - 4:1 purchase. It was installed this morning and "tested" this afternoon. There is minor interference with the rudder at the extreme ends, but very easy to override past the adjustment lines. The temporary line is cheap 1/4" stuff I got at Home Depot that will be replaced with a better quality 5/16" line. Here are pictures of the setup:
