Has anyone replaced their plastic hatches with Lewmar low profile units? If so, what model #? If not, what hatches fit the openings?

The Bomar makes a deck hatch Model #995-10
in black or white. The small hatches are
model #910-10.
They are available from Defender or West.
Also, Thrifty Marine in FT. Lauderdale(www.
Thriftymarine.com)
They are easy to install, although the original screw holes may not totally match.

I changed out the forward hatch for a Lewmar Ocean 60 hatch. Fit the opening in the deck fine, but has a different mounting hole pattern.

Lewmar Ocean 60 without the flange, fits over the large opening.

Lewmar Ocean 10 without the flange, fits over the two small openings.

I started down the Bomar route but then realized that replacing the prisms in the stock hatches was a very simple matter. (Mine just pressed out with hand pressure.) This turned a multi-hundred $ project into a $20 one. I used tinted plexiglass and it has worked fine.

Flipping throught the Layline catalog the other day, I saw the low profile Lewmar hatches you are talking about. The catalog recommend using the Ocean series on a J-boat due to excessive modifications necessary to install the low-profile model.

I read this topic a few months ago and took the everyone's suggestion about contacting Jeff at the thriftymarine. He did give me an extra 10% off for mentioning the J-30 association.

I could not believe the price. I replaced all three hatches for under $350 Delivered!!

I plan on replacing the hatches on Gwylan (#523) and have noticed that Lewmar Ocean Series is recommended by some. Can anyone tell me what differences there are between the flange vs. no flange version of this hatch? Is installation process or performance different?

The Lewmar hatches with a flange will not fit into the existing deck opening. The hatch without the flange will surface mount on the deck with no problems - just drill a few new bolt holes.

Just one correction to Jack's reply concernin Bomar hatches. The website is actually
www.thriftymariner.com

with an "r". Note that they sell overstock and damaged goods.
