I have been concidering replacing winches too. I found the Harken 32.2 self tailing has 16/1 and 32/1 power ratios and the 40.2 self tailing has 13.5/1 and 40/1. The best prices I,ve found so far is "Rigging only" at $640 (32.2) and $712 (40.2). Anyone found a better price?

The old Barients had a 48:1 power ratio in 2nd gear and I am interested what the consensus is as it concerns that number being "overkill" or "adequate". I really liked the Barients but refurbishment looks impossible. I took my old winches to a good machine shop and we rebuilt them. They were scored and out of round we found a set of sealed bearings and re-bored the drum and refaced the bottom of the drum. Then pressed in a set of new bearings in there own race so the hardened bearings roll on the steel post not the other way around (in the old design the alum, drum spun on the bearings and that is what wore them out). Then we re- knurled the out side and they work perfect. The cost was around 100.00 a lot less then new st's

Even with shipping costs added to a bill that might run over twice your cost, that is a really preferable alternative to the great RIGGING ONLY price for new Harkens which is the best that I have seen by just over $100/pair. Thanks for both replies. I will definitely end up pursuing one of your courses of action. i used frederick machine repair inc in buffalo ny 716-892-1425 this was several years ago. i think if you get a set of drawings from the australian winch co and take the winches to any shop that is local you will be able to explain the problem and what needs to be done -remember most of the guys have never seen a winch so you will have a little bit of explaining to do. by the way dont tell them how much they are worth beacuse the price of the repair may go up.

Did the class decide which winches are acceptable to replace primaries or secondaries?
