Hello,
My name is Rob Garraty and I have owned a 1986 J-30 for a couple of years. The last three digits of my hull id # are 686. I bought the boat in Rhode Island a couple of summers ago and intended to keep it and race/cruise it up there till my wife Gigi informed me that we were going to have a baby and I better stay close to our permanent home in Marco Island, Florida for a while. So I brought the boat down here and have been cruising and restoring it here in Florida. I've been enjoying the info from the website and will probably join the class as I want to contribute and communicate with the other owners of the J-30's. I've been racing J-105s and other classes and may start racing my J-30 soon, so I want you all to know that #686 is still alive and well and in remarkably good and I think almost original condition. Sadly I haven't named her yet and I know it's bad luck but hopefully I will become inspired soon. Anyway I will continue to enjoy the forums and will look forward to contributing any info that I can offer as I bring "whats her name" back to her original glory and see some of you out on the water some day soon.

Rob,

Welcome to the forum! The numbers you posted are probably the date code and not the hull number. Check out this link for the hull number description and let us know what you have. http://j30.us/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/5730/Re_J30_hull_number.html#Post5730

Once you ID the correct hull number I'll have a link sent to you so the J/30 Fleet database can be updated with your information.

Bill,
Yeah the number confused me because I know that there weren't 686 plus boats built. My registration shows the Hull Identification Number like this: TSP000540D686
So maybe the hull number is 540. I think thats the sail #. I'd check the back of the boat but it's late and I've had some wine so I don't want to fall overboard.
From what I've read in the forums, mine may be one of the last few made which is what I expected. I'll confirm this during the day and get back to you. I realize it's good for the class to keep track of the fleet and keep a tally of the the boats that are still in service. Thanks.

Rob,

1986 was a great year, we're one hull# away sailing #539 in Salem, MA.
