When I bought my J-30 a few years ago there was a six foot long or so aluminum pole about four inches in diameter on board. Maybe a reaching strut? Anybody have an idea what it is. If it is a reaching strut how is it rigged on a J-30?

One end has a standard latch type end like the regular spinaker pole the other end has a sheave on it and no latch.

Sounds like a reaching strut to me. Does the sheave end have a kind of "beak" sticking out? Look aof a ring or mound of some kind on each side of the mast below the gooseneck. The pole end goes on there and the beak rests on your guy. Not legal for one-design and you won't have time for it on a bouy race, but it'll reduce your guy loading on a long offshore reach.

Yep it's an Jockey Pole which fits to a ring on either side of the mast with the standard spin pole end and the other end goes to the guy it takes a lot of strain off the guy when you are tight reaching.
