David,
How do you arange the cross sheet. One turn around the winch and across? A block at the end of the track?

Then what reference do you use from the rail or helm to call propper trim?

Been thinking about doing it and have no one to reference against. Won't work the way the J24s do it.

Enquiring minds want to know.

Mark

Tie a block to each primary. Trim the sheet on the winward secondary.

I think the proposed changes make sense keeping the class up to date and want to implement them for next season.
Other suggestions; why not lift the sail cloth restriction on the main, give the option of eliminating/relocating one set of secondary winches, lift restrictions of #/location of padyeys, extend the track for the pole to deck level.
Most of the proposed changes will not drastically change the performance of the boat and will only make sense when replacements are needed anyway or to customize the controls for the crew.
In my opinion a well sailed "stock J/30" will still be as fast or faster than a "tweaked" average boat.

I don't really mean to start a debate, but I'm not sure how you reconcile that statement with allowing unlimited materials in the main especially? A kevlar main for a J/30 is rather pricey, and from the sailmakers I've talked with, not a big gain.

I hope the class will continue to keep the cost of racing my boat reasonable.

I have not seen this done but it sounds clever & useful.

How do you tie a block to a drum without wrapping it up as you winch in a sheet ?

Do you just tie a large loop of webbing that falls to the deck around the winch base when out of play ?

The cross sheeting topic has been transfered to the "Racing Tools and Techniques" forum to allow focus on proposed Class rule changes.

Use a sail tie and secure a block. Run the sheet as you would to the primary but run it through the block (Harken #1955 I think). Run the sheet to the winward side secondary and trim on the high side. It takes a while to get use too... If you like it, you can mount the block more permanantly to eliminate the sail tie trick.

Here is some additional discussion on the J/105 forum regarding cross sheeting:

What... a photo of the "fat boys" on the rail at the same time? Wouldn't be pretty.
