I have read the pieces on the spreader problem and decided to call a couple of the rigging companies mentioned. One of them told me that the easiest fix was to drill out the middle rivet of the spreader brackets and insert a threaded rod through the holes with an angled spacer and nut on each end. He told me he has seen "0" failures with this fix. Has anyone out there tryed this approach? Results?

I'm trying to visualize this solution and can't see how it will fix the problem. What is needed is a way to transfer the shroud tension from the windward spreader to the leeward one. That kind of a through-bolt won't, if I correctly imagine what you're suggesting. I think that this solution would help prevent the spreaders from "rocking" when the mast pumps.

I too have received the same information as Frank, to use the threaded through-bolt with angled spacers. The individual who suggested this said there is no problem with overtightening and stressing the mast and that this relieves the rocking spreader problem. I'm not sure I follow Joe Ruzzi's line in his reply. Frank, what have you decided to do???
