Firt off I would like to thank everyone who has responded to my endless queeries. I have gotten mixed reviews on the suitability and performance of the J-30 for offshore racing. Does anyone have any experience in this area? Thank-you again.
I used to email a guy in NS who owned and club-raced a J30. Pretty sure he bought his sails from the Victory loft (Bedford?). Perhaps the sailmaker can put you in touch with the guy.
IMHO, a 1984-onward J30 (larger cockpit, and coamings) would be a good offshore boat in your area.

I have not sailed my J/30 offshore. I have sailed much bigger boats in the Atlantic in conditions that I was extremely glad I was not on the J/30. I'd make sure chain plates, spreaders, engine cover holddowns, hatches and other key structural areas are sound. BTW - engine intake is not especially far below WL. Could be a problem on Starboard tack in a blow. S. Hunter

There is an article somewhere on the 30 page about a J-30 that finished the Fastnet race in the year when a storm caused many fatalities in the race. Not a bad test! I personally have sailed my 30 up the New Jersey coast in a 25-30 knot NE storm for 8 hours. Shorthanded with full main and #3 up, no problems.
Do check the integrity of the main bulkhead, as the rig ties into it and it has a history of getting waterlogged.
