Hum, I have obtained an official 5 digit number from US Sailing to avoid sail number duplication in all parts of the country - except Annapolis :>)

FireBall's sail number came with the boat when I purchased it. I'm not sure where the previous owner got them from.

Butch - see David Erwin's post about the US Sailing Contact above. Your sail number was probably done through them. You could call them and if it was previously registered to your hull, they will update the records to your name at no charge. I think the duplicate number is a Chesapeake Bay issue.
