Having recently acquired hull #79 I am still trying to figure out how everything is set up as opposed to how it should be set up, especially as far as mainsail reefing is concerned. What is the best way to rig the mainsail reefing so that there is only one reefing line leading aft to the cockpit. Thanks

If your main has two reef points then it is not possible. Regardless I have a triple block that is just off to port from center-line just aft of the mast on a padeye. The reef lines come out of forward end of the boom around their turning sheaves down through the block on the deck back to clutches at the cockpit. Not optimal because if you are sailing downwind on starboard jibe or even on a broad reach the vang is resting on the reefing line. This could be fixed by adding the jam cleats to the forward end of the boom. Because you could then release the reefline from the clutch and make it go slack.

I don not have a single reef line. I have run the reefing line back to the cockpit, rather than use the original jammers at the forward end of the boom.
1) I removed the jammers from the boom, and replaced them with a turning block.
2) At the base of the mast, another turning block to lead the line aft.
3) Add a jammer on the deck on the port side next to the halyard jammer.

No it is not single line reefing. With the ocean racing I have done (not on the J/30), we have found that single line reefing does not work when the wind is howling because of all the friction in the system. We still had to send someone to the mast, you might as well have the old dependable slab reefing. So we got rid of it. The old Keep It Simple Solution. So I keep my J/30 with slab reefing.
