I raced on a 30 back in the early 80's, I think it was hull #46(could be real wrong). We had factory installed runners, couldn't use for class racing but we did allot of PHRF then, they did not seem to make any diference to performance. THe J-30 rig is kinda stiff for runners and the windage is not worth the minor if any speed increase. Hope this helps!!

I don't believe there's any J/30 that came with runners on delivery. They may have been added later, or if a mast was replaced, the new mast could have had them.

All the rig tuning guidelines are available on the J30 website ( www.j30.org). You'll find the class rules and a tuning guide from Banks Sails.

Well, Hull 3, which still has the original stick, has the slots up top for the runner t-toggles. There's some wear on the slots, so presumably someone played with them on that boat at some time. By the time we got the boat, the then current owner didn't have the runners, and couldn't recall if he'd gotten then when he bought the boat used, more than ten years previous.
