I hit some rocks this past weekend and I am having the boat short hauled on Monday 17 June. Any thoughts on repairing the lead such as fairing and filling the gouges in the keel. Also appears to be a tiny leak from the rear area of the keel to stub attachment. Any thoughts as how to pinpoint the area of the leak and how to seal it. Thanks in advance for any advice, Paul

A did the same thing a couple of years ago which left a major ding on the leading edge of our keel. I filled it with thickened West epoxy, and faired that. It seems to have held up very well.

I also used west system with some filler to repair a ding after a grounding about 5 years ago. When you are out of the water, also check the hull behind the keel. I had small cracks in the hull that were allowing moisture into the core. It also cracked some of the vermiculite that fills the space between the floorboards and the hull. These repairs were much more significant in $$'s than the keel damage.
About 8 years ago I had a fairly substaintial leak in the rear of the sump along the center line. Kinda like the two halves were not properly glued. I used a long recprcating saw blade and cleaned out all the old glass, flushed with liberal amounts of solvent and injected fom the bottom up WEST epoxy. This stopped all of my bilge leak that had always been in the boat.

Ed, I'm interested in knowing more about cracked vermiculite... I assume that's the rough stuff between sole and hull. Mine's cracked, but surveyor said "no big deal." And any water that enters hull space through aft hatches or engine comp drains through this filler into bilge anyway... so I wouldn't think to plug it. How and why did you repair it? Thx. The yard that repaired the grounding damage, recommended repairing the vermiculite as well. As I understand, it adds some structure and stiffness to the keel area. On Chinook, there were many cracks and even loose pieces. The yard, broke up the cracked vermiculite, and replaced it. If you need more details, I will check with the guy who did the repair.
