Call me lazy, but I was just looking through my chart books and was going to prepare a route from Newport to Cedar Point YC. I'm sure somebody has already done that. Does anyone have the waypoints already? I can take a Maptech File, Garmin route file, or just about anything and convert it.

Planning for the NA's Already? :P
I'm not exactaly sure as I've never made the trip myself. I can however point you towards Trevor Roach (Forever And Always) Carl or Halsey Bullen (Laser Beam). They made the trip back after the NA's this year and are probably the best ones to talk to.

Ok - no excuses from the SNE fleet not to go to Cedar Point for the 2009 NAs. I created a route plan from Newport and have uploaded a Zip file that has my Garmin GPS file along with all the Maptech charts printed out in a PDF file with the route annotations. I also included the tide tables for predicted currents by the Race / Watch Hill Point area.

It's already on my calender to deliver Rhapsody the weekend before the NAs - depart Newport at 0900 Friday 25 September to get the favorable currents, and arrive at Cedar Point on Sat at about 1400.

Vic - I trust Naples is warm & sunny. We had a white Christmas Eve, but the rain, 35 kt winds and temps 40-50 took all the snow away when we woke up this morning.

Actually I do usually go under the east side span but use the siren at the center of the Newport Bridge as a convenient designation when I'm laying out routes in the channel. It also helps coming back in the fog, like we did a couple of Tuesday night races.

Merry Christmas - Bill

Vic had a different version of the Garmin S/W and couldn't use the file above, so I've saved the Garmin file in 3 formats - Garmin V2 (original file is in Garmin V3 format), GPX Exchange Format, and a text file. All in the attached Zip file.

I hate having to update the Mapsource software every five years or so ... but that downloaded well and Bill's waypoint database now resides in my 76 and on my computer... and soon to be on Vee Jay 2 once I buy a chip ... which seems to be the only way the 440s communicate with a computer.

I am now "compatible" with the younger generation ... am also thinking about piercing my nose and hanging a chip on a gold ring.
