Revised rules prohibit triggers (section 5.11.4). Does that apply only to composite ends, or aluminum ends too? (not sure how to interpret).

Triggers have always been prohibited. This is not a new rule. Triggers are used to lock the jaws open during a gybe and are not permitted in most one design classes.

To further clarify my reply. The type of ends is not important. Triggers that lock the jaws open are not permitted.

I'm holding an earlier copy of the class rules that do not include that prohibition, at least not in the spinnaker pole section (I'd be surprised if it was elsewhere but I'll check). So now that it is explicitly prohibited in the pole section, does the class consider it acceptable to tape the triggers open for purposes of sailing at the NA's? Appreciate advice soon - I was going to leave on Saturday.
thx.

e.g., tape over hose clamps - reasonably permanent "defeat" of the triggers. Sound ok?

The rules start as follows:
Notice to Owners and Sailmakers
It is impossible to foresee every conceivable innovation which may be thought of in the future and to mention every suggestion that has been ruled illegal in the past. When considering anything in connection with the boat or sails or equipment which is not within established practice in the J/30 Class or is not clearly covered by the plans or specifications, you must assume that it is illegal, and must obtain a ruling from the Chief Measurer before attempting it.

Since triggers were not part of the original equipment they are prohibited. We ( Rules Committee) have ruled on this in the past.

If you can disable them and still use the pole that will be OK.

I am posting this for anyone who does not have access to the latest rules

.2 Length from tip to tip of the pole shall not exceed 3810 mm nor when attached to the fitting at the mast, extend more than 3842 mm from the face of the mast.
.3 Bridle is required and the material is not restricted.
.4 Spinnaker end fittings can be of composite material such as the Forespar "ultra" series. A trigger mechanisms for holding the jaws open is not permitted.
