If you have Forum Registration Problems
[Re: J/30]

If you have Forum Registration Problems You can read the J/30 Forum and J/30 Marketplace without registering but in order to post a new message or reply, you must register via the "Register" button near the upper right portion of the screen. You'll be taken to a registration screen where you select your user name, password and must enter a valid email address. The screen also has random characters displayed you'll need to type in. We did this to reduce the amount of automated spam.
When you click to submit your J/30 Forum registration, you are sent a validation email from webmaster@j30.us that includes confirmation of your registration. This email contains a link that you must click to activate your account.
If you don't receive the Registration Confirmation Email
Look in your Spam folder and see if the message is there, if so please change your spam filter to allow messages from webmaster@j30.us or if you have the ability allow all messages from the "j30.us" email domain. If you found the email, click on the link to activate your account - problem fixed.
If you did not receive an email, contact the J/30 Webmaster by sending an email to webmaster@j30.us and provide the user name you submitted for registration. Don't send the password in the email as it won't be needed. The Webmaster will be able to manually activate your account and send you a confirmation email.
Problem logging in, or once in you get logged out
[Re: J/30]
#6803 01/15/0909:23 AM01/15/0909:23 AM
Problem logging in, or once in you get logged out I received an email from someone who had a problem logging in from work. I tried using their login name and password and was able to log on the forum with their user name. There was an issue with the person logging in behind a firewall at work. Here is information on how to fix some potential scenarios that can cause this.
If you are running a proxy server, using a home network with a proxy server or using Windows XP with a Firewall, you may have problems using this site. Instead of getting pages from our site, you may be getting cached pages from your hard drive or from your ISP. To solve this issue, you must clear out the page cache and disable it. See the technical instructions below for your browser.
Problem - any one or more of the following:
Users cannot see new content, even after they have just posted it.
Users do not appear to be able to log in.
Some users report that the light bulbs/new post count is not working correctly.
Cause: This is most likely caused by the web browser drawing pages from either a local disk cache or a cache at the ISP or Firewall level.
Resolution:
A. Firefox:
Select Tools -> Options -> Privacy section
Click "Settings" in the "Private Data" section and make sure the box that enables you to erase the Cache is checked (if not, then check it).
Click "OK"
Click "Clear Now"
Click "Clear Private Data Now" if a pop-up window asks you
Click "OK"
B. Internet Explorer 6 Series
Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy Tab
Click "Advanced"
Ensure settings are the following: -> "Override automatic cookie handling" - CHECKED ->First party Cookies: ACCEPT - selected ->Third-party Cookies: BLOCK - selected -> "Always allow session cookies" - user discretion
This allows the UBB to work as designed while still blocking potentially malicious third party cookies.
In addition, the J/30 Class Forum can **NOT** exist within a frameset. Internet Explorer often sees the UBB within the frameset as a "third party" and will block the cookies.
C. Netscape:
Select Edit -> Preferences -> Click the '+' next to "Advanced"
Select "Cache"
Menu on the right says "Document in cache is compared to Document on network:" ->"Once Per session" ->"Every time" ->"Never"
Choose "Every Time"
Click "OK"
Additional Information: If you are using a cable modem, please contact your cable modem provider to discuss the page cache that they may be running on the system. Be prepared to use an alternate provider (dial up) as a test of the page cache if they are indeed running one. Many hosts with cache systems claim that they are 'transparent' when that is not the case. Also know that many ISP's around the country will run cache servers that only clear out at scheduled intervals. This can affect performance regionally and make content fail to show up correctly for users in these areas where the cache has not cleared for awhile.
Problem - When trying to make a post or reply, you receive a "this is not a valid host" error message.
You may need to make an adjustment to your Norton Internet Security Software.
For Norton Internet Security: 1. Open Norton Internet Security. 2. Click Options. 3. Click Internet Security (or Personal Firewall) 4. Click Advanced Options 5. Click the Web tab 6. Click Add Site. A new site/domain box appears. 7. Enter the url of the site that you want to receive the referrer information (www.j30.us) and click OK. That site name appears in the left frame of the Advanced Options window. 8. Click the name of the new site 9. Click the Privacy tab 10. Check the "Use these rules for..." box 11. Change the Referrer from "Block" to "Allow." 12. Click Apply, and then click OK. 13. Click OK to close the Options window.
For ZoneAlarm Pro: 1. Begin at ZoneAlarm Pro Control Center (if ZAP is minimized to tray, simply right click on the "ZA" symbol and choose "Restore ZoneAlarm Pro Control Center".) 2. From left-hand column, choose "Privacy" (below "Alerts & Logs" and above "Email Protection".) 3. Click menu tab that says "Site List" (next to "Main", under "Help", in right-hand corner.) 4. Click on "Add" button on bottom right corner of Control Center (above "Options".) 5. A box pops up that says "Add sites to your privacy list by entering the URL below" and then asks for "URL". Type in the URL for the site like: www.j30.us 6. Click "OK". 7. Locate the site you just entered in the list of sites and right click anywhere on that line. You are given the choice of "Remove" and "Options". Choose "Options". 8. You are given the options for the site you just entered. Under the "Cookies" menu, go to the "3rd Party Cookies" section. Uncheck "Remove Private Header Information". Click "Apply" at bottom. Click "OK" at bottom.
If you actually made it through, you should now be able to post at the site you entered without having to disable ZAP or getting the "invalid host" error.
Problem - any one or more of the following: Users log in correctly, get to the J/30 Forum, but as soon as they click on any link they are logged back out. This means they can't post, send PM's, etc.
Cause: - Most likely scenario is the user's computer set to the wrong date.
Resolution: - Check the date on your computer.
Windows 1. Double-click on the Time down in the lower right-hand corner of your screen 2. Use the Start menu: Click Start and choose Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Date and Time icon.
Mac: 1. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels. 2. Double-click the Date & Time control panel icon.
If the date is wrong, fix it. The problem is that J/30 Forum is placing the cookie on the user's computer, but as soon as they click a link and forum tries to find the cookie, it has already expired, because their computer thinks it's months in the future.

How to be notified for new posts in selected forums, or private messages
Each user has the ability to select various notification options for postings on the forum and private messages. Here is how you select the options available (assumes you are logged in to do this).
Personal Message Notification Emails
Click on your Forum Login Name displayed near the upper right and a drop-down appears. Click "Preferences" and a screen with various option settings appears. If you scroll down, you'll be able to click yes or no for the following options:
Accept private messages from other users?
By default should anything added to your Fllowed Lists be emailed to you?
Do you want to be notified via email when you receive a private message?
You select what you want to be notified about, then scroll to the bottom and click "Submit"
Forum & Topic Notification Emails
Click on your Forum Login Name displayed near the upper right and a drop-down appears. Click "Followed Lists" and a screen with various option settings appears. There are three tabs at the top labeled "Followed Forums", "Followed Threads" and "Followed Users". Click the tab you want to setup, then click the link on the right side labeled "Edit Followed xxxx" where xxxx is the respective tab you selected.
To follow an entire forum,
select "yes" or "no" under the "followed" column
Select the desired posting or topic notification by clicking the drop-down in the "Email Notification" column
Click the "Update Followed Forums" button at the bottom when finished making your choices
If you want to monitor a specific topic and not the entire forum:
Open the desired topic while browsing the forum, or searching for it
Just under the main menu is an option labeled "Thread Options" - click on it and select "Add Thread to your Followed Threads"
You can later edit or delete followed threads via the menu sequence using the "Update Followed Threads" option button

Viewing Poll Results as a Bar Graph
[Re: Rhapsody #348]
#7035 03/06/0909:15 AM03/06/0909:15 AM
Each user can see the results of a poll as a bar graph automatically, after they have voted. If you have not logged in, or if you are logged in and have not voted in the particular poll, you will see the poll question with the voting options.
If you would like to see the poll results before voting, there is a link at the bottom of each question labeled "View results of this poll". Click on that and the bar graph poll results will be displayed. Note that when a person sets up a poll, there is an option that can be set to prevent viewing poll results until after you vote. If the poll was setup this way, you will not see the results until after voting.

Changing Viewing Preferences - How old posts are made invisible
"I don't want to see all that old stuff cluttering my screen" or "I can't see that old stuff I wanted to see".
Either way - we can help you. Each individual forum (e.g. J/30 Class Association Business, The Boat, Sails and Equipment,...) under the main forum category (J/30 Class Association Forum, J/30 Marketplace, J/30 Districts) can be set by you.
Click on the forum you want to change the settings for and scroll down to the bottom. There is a dropdown labeled "Show Topics" where you can select the date range. You can also modify the default sort order which is set to show the most recent post at the top. Once you have the settings you desire for that forum, click the "Change" button. Make the changes to other forum categories the same way.
Remember if you only show posts after a certain date, you won't see these posts unless you either search for them, or change the settings again.
Anyone can view the User List from the menu
[Re: Rhapsody #348]
#7218 03/28/0907:52 AM03/28/0907:52 AM
The settings on the forum have been changed so now anybody including unregistered users can view the menu item "User List". This allows someone to look for a registered users display name. Previously only registered users who were logged in could view the User List. You have to be logged in to see the profile associated with a display name on the user list.
This change was made so that people who forget their login name can look for it, instead of creating a new login name. Then if the password is also forgotten, the Forget your password? link can be used to send a temporary password.
If you know you have a registered name on the forum and are unable to log in, email the webmaster for help.
Photo Forum - Some Known Limitations
[Re: Rhapsody #348]
#7745 08/18/0907:22 AM08/18/0907:22 AM
There is a bug in the forum software that impacts the photo forum. You can only add photos to a photo forum post using the image manager as the originator of the posting. This can be done in the original post, or by Edit, but not in a Reply. This means nobody including the originator can reply and add a photo or a link to a photo.
Additionally, you are limited to 20 photos in the original post in the photo forum and can Edit the original post to add up to 20 photos. You can't go back and Reply to add new photos once you've submitted the post. If you try, the image on the photo gallery to the right of the forum will just show up as text, but the photo will be visible if you open the posting. Note the 20 photo limit is set by us. If you want to upload more than 20 photos, you need to add another post in the photo forum.
These problems have been reported to the UBB Threads Software developer and the problem will be corrected as soon as there is a patch available. In the mean time, just learn to live with the limitation.
Getting Notified When Someone Posts in YOUR District Forum

Getting Notified When Someone Posts in YOUR District Forum
Some changes were made on the back end of the forum so that registered users were added to groups corresponding to their respective J/30 districts. A feature was enabled that provides users an email notification when somebody posts in the group corresponding to their district forum.
You have the ability to modify this (e.g. turn it off) if you desire. You can also modify your settings for notifications from other J/30 forums. You can read how to change the setting in this post.
If anyone has problems figuring this out, send me a PM here on the forum.
Attaching Photos to Show in Your Forum Post
[Re: J/30]

There is a little known secret that I've been going into posts that people have attached pictures to insert the codes so they will display in line with the post. Information is provided here so anyone can do this to their own posts in the future. Here are the steps.
Attach the jpg, gif or png file using the File Manager link at the bottom of your post (visible when creating or replying to a post only)
Complete your post then click the Submit button
Open the post for reading as you normally do, then mouse over the link at the bottom of the post with the file attachment. Right click on the link and depending on your browser, select "Copy Link Location", "Copy Shortcut" or similar option offered on the browser menu. If you have multiple attachments, it's easier to open the post in a new window so you can easily switch between windows that are Reading a post and Editing a post
Click on Edit (if multiple pictures do this in another browser window)
Position the cursor at the position you want the picture to display. Insert a couple of line feeds so there is a blank line above and below where you want to insert the picture
Click on the picture Icon in the forum editing toolbar just above your posting window. It's the 4th icon from the left, in between the icon that looks like a letter, and an icon that looks like a monitor (see below - Icon with red line around it). When the context menu displays, click on "insert a non-floating image", then in the dialog box that appears, paste the link that you captured by pressing "Ctrl V" to paste (this is the Windows paste function)
When you've completed inserting images, press Change Post - hint, you can press Preview Post and scroll down to see how the post will look and edit as needed before pressing Submit
File Format Hint Update:BMP (bitmap) is NOT one of the file formats supported by the Forum software, so will not display as an inline picture. It must be formatted as a jpg, gif or png file. You can open the bmp file in most any photo editor (including "Paint" included with Windows, and resave it in the required format.

Making Forum Posts Displayed With Your Local Time I received an email from someone who asked about how to make forum posts reflect times appropriate for where they lived. The server we run the forum on is located in the Eastern US time zone, so all times will be set relative to that.
To adjust the time settings for your location, do the following:
Click on your Forum Login Name displayed near the upper right and a drop-down appears.
Click "Preferences" and a screen with various option settings appears.
Scroll down and find the field labeled Your Timezone
Click the dropdown and select the desired timezone (e.g. UTC-05:00 - America/New_York xx:xx AM)
Scroll down and click the "Submit" button.
The times should automatically be adjusted for Daylight Savings shifts. That can cause problems with time being off an hour for some locations, so you may need to manually adjust the offset when the clocks change.

Setting a Custom Avatar for your Profile I received an email from someone who asked about how to upload a custom Avatar that displays on the left side of each post you make, and in your profile. The Avatars can be done either by uploading an image, or linking to one you already have stored somewhere on the internet. Uploaded Avatars are limited to 80x80 pixels. There is a link provided below that allows you to easily resize your image to that size.
In the box labeled Upload an image or zip archive click on the Browse button and click on your selected image getting ready top upload it
In the box labeled Resize Options click on the Common Sizes dropdown and select 80x80 Avatar
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Convert Images
Once the image conversion is complete click on the Download Images button and save the file to a location on your hard disk that you can find in the steps below
To set a custom Avatar, do the following:
Click on your Forum Login Name displayed near the upper right and a drop-down appears.
Click "Edit Profile" and a screen with various settings appears.
Scroll down to the bottom and check the button to Upload your Avatar, then click Browse and find the location where you saved the Avatar you want to upload
Click the Submit button at the bottom
You should now have your custom Avatar stored
