This is a lift from the announcement David Bows put in the "Boat, Sails & Equipment" forum at the following link: http://j30.us/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/4702/Marblehead_NOODs_July_26_29_20.html#Post4702 I've truncated a few entries for this posting. Tally for Who's in so far: #397 Mallorca (David Bows - Marblehead) #495 Mithril (Ty Janney - Marblehead) #348 Rhapsody (Bill Kneller - Newport) Originally posted by dbows: I am going to get a J/30 OD start at this years NOODs here in Marblehead. Should be no problem with the number of boats around here. We just need 6 boats. There is usually about 250-300 boats at the NOODs here so it is a great time and we should have a start.
Please - if you are in the Boston area either North Shore, South Shore, Maine, NH, RI you are not to far to go.
It is an easy ride from Buzzards bay. It usually takes about 7-8 hrs from the Eastern exit of the canal to get to Marblehead.
I can work on housing and moorings if we get this going early.
I want to make this a fun and competitive event and since most of us have not raced OD on our boats in a while/or ever, at this point we just want the participation. So please do not get to hung up that you are not a racer or your boat and crew are not rock stars, let just get out there and have some fun. ...... ..... ...
There are no slips in Marblehead, only moorings, I assume this will be fine. As for all large regattas there will be some rafting going on but starting early we can get moorings arranged for everyone. There are about 1500 moorings just in Marblehead harbor so we should be fine but it does get very crazy during this week and early planning pays off. We have 5 yacht clubs on the harbor so there are launches going all the time to the parties and to town. The Eastern is the host club this year so they will work on moorings, but I am a member at the Boston Yacht Club - which is in Marblehead - and I can start working on moorings for those who want to come. It should not be hard to come up with 3 moorings (two boats on each). I can take another on my mooring, that is a total of 8 boats. If we got that we would have a great time.

Further to David's info here are a few links that should have more information as the event planning unfolds: http://www.sailingworld.com/nood_regatta.jsp?location=602 Host Yacht Club is Eastern YC: http://www.easternyc.org/ Other Yacht Clubs in the Marblehead Area: http://www.bostonyachtclub.net/ http://www.corinthianyc.org/welcome361.html http://pleon.org/2006/index.php http://www.marbleheadyc.org/ http://www.dolphinyachtclub.com/ I plan on doing a family cruise on Rhapsody departing Newport on Sun 22 July , visiting Oak Bluffs - Martha's Vineyard, stopping at Scituate Harbor late Weds 25 July, then arriving in Marblehead for Regatta registration etc just after noon Thursday on 26 July. My sister and her husband have a stink pot and I hope will come along to be the "chase boat" and take photos. If anyone from Long Island Sound or Narragansett Bay area wants to join Rhapsody for the cruise to Marblehead, shoot me an email (link above this post) and we can coordinate logistics. I nominate David Bows as the "official" J/30 organizer for the Marblehead NOOD since he's the local guy with the best knowledge and contacts (like for cheap beer). For out of area folks who may be interested, John Howell - owner of Good News (#175) sent an email that Good News is available as loaner for this regatta. Good News is kept at East Greenwich Yacht Club in Narragansett Bay, so you would still need to get it up to Marblehead & back. Contact me via email if you are interested, and I'll put you in touch with John.

Bill, This is good news. I want to mention a possible way to get to NOODS. The Boston Yacht Club has a great overnight race from Marblehead to Provincetown (the tip of Cap Cod) on the Friday before the NOODS, then there is a huge/great party Sat afternoon and night, then there is a parade of boats back to Marblehead with some great Whale watching along the way. The track takes you through the largest whale sanctuary on the east coast. So if you come from Buzzards bay you can stop in P Town for Sat night and then make the 5-7hr trip to M'Head on Sunday - good way to break up the delivery. David #397

Ok it is official. We will have a start in the NOODS provided we get the 6 required boats. We have 4 committed already! I spoke to the race organizers and the race committee chairs (also happens to be race chair at my yacht club) and they will have a line for us.
Interstingly enough they said they could possibly score us PHRF so that we could have any configuration of J/30's race. This may be good for this year and then next year after everyone has had a blast make it based on the stricter OD configurations.
This would slightly diminish the value of racing OD but at least we would have our own start and it would help kick-start the OD racing here.
Thoughs?

Great Red! Hope you can make it. I will plan on having a Fleet party at my house one night. It is just steps away from the Boston Yacht Club so everyone can walk there and stumble home (-: David
