The holly strips have rotten out in the forward cabin/head. What are my options in replacing these?

Same question here. Had replaced once but water from mast doesn't drain into bilge so area has rotted again.

Holly rots fairly easily. One option is to use epoxy thickened with holly sawdust. It will be a reasonable match and you won't have the rot problem again.

On Rhapsody I removed the waterlogged Teak & Holly on the flat surface by the mast and finished that area with gelcoat. The rest of the sole in the fwd & main cabin still has the Teak & Holly. I used a plastic snake with barbs to clean out the bilge drain that previously drained slowly and kept the hole by the forward sole wet.

Bill, as ususal you have great advice and an excellent record of you work.

Do you have a picture of flat surface by the mast that you finished with Gel coat? Also, do you know if someone sells holly? I could make the dust or cut strips of holly. However, it sounds like your flat surface project might be the best way to go.

Thanks

I looked at Bill's during the summer and it reminded me of some of the first J30s before they started to stick the teak and holly on top of a nice clean non skid surface.

Basically looks like what it should be for the mast step.

What is it with the light woods ... the Ash on the laminated tillers seems to rot a lot faster than the mahagony as well.

What do you have Vee Jay? Now I'm starting to belive the best course would be to remove all of the teak and holly, clean and apply non-skid. Nothing is ever as easy as it sounds!

This is very nice. What material did you find under the forward teak & holly sole, fiberglass?

Look near the base of the mast and you will see a hint of the non skid that they lay the teak and holly over ... and then screw through each teak piece into that base floor. Bill did a nice retoration of that non skid surface to fill the screw holes.

On Vee Jay the holly turned black but not soft ... it would not oxalic acid bleach out so I painted those strips a nearly close color match before finish coats of varnish. I had drilled those drain holes 20 years earlier.

On Vee Jay 2, the POs didn't realize they had to drill drain holes and the holly rotted. I used a dremel a la dentist to excavate the rot and filled it with wood putty ... as it turned out pretty dumb as that shrinks. Will figure out how to make that look better in May. Fall back is to do a Bill job and just rip it out. But hey how great does the floor of a Head have to be???
