Attached preliminary commo on NA delivery/return/cruise ... looking for additional input. This is looking like a 10 day program figuring getting into MH on Wed and returning on Mon. night running, if at all, in upper BB mostly under power depending on crew. I would be ok going through at night depending on the weather with a straight shot to Marblehead. Don't think cuttyhunk is far enough up BB for a stop. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: bill_kneller@hotmail.com To: vic@vicfarmer.com Subject: RE: J/30 North American Championship - Sign up now, pay later! Date: Tue, 16 Feb 2010 21:51:57 -0500 Vic - you read it correct. I'd be at Buzzards Bay end around 11am to catch the good push through the 21 miles in the canal. Figure with 3 kts current you make about 8 kts average. Date: Tue, 16 Feb 2010 21:17:56 -0500 Am I reading it right that the window east at the canal is ~10/11 am/pm Aug. 3? The last delivery I did through the canal was over 10 years ago was at night -- out of Boston around 10 am ending up at Dutch H around 4 am. Ran out of fuel and had to sail up to the dock.

Hi potential cruise buddies, I'm looking at our Rhapsody cruise plans for Marblehead this summer. Potential participants include J/30s Rhapsody, Falcon, Nemesis, Vee Jay, Wicked, Good News, Keltyk Knot and CHNYC boats Island Time, Hitutilu, Carolina Girl, Dream Boat, Agape, Sara Jane, others? Here are the rough plans mapped around Cape Cod Canal tidal currents and some "fixed" parameters on places to stay. Roughly we plan on cruising ~ 50 miles per day with a 5 knot SOA for the pleasure cruise, and straight through for "gotta get there" mode. This means if you're not making 5 knots good with wind, run the iron genny. Friday 30 July9:30am Depart Newport to ?? (Cuttyhunk, Marthas Vineyard, places in Buzzards Bay TBD) Lets figure out what places we want to see Fri through Tues am. Tuesday 3 August11:30am to 1:30pm - Be at Buzzards Bay end of Cape Cod Canal to maximize SOG with current (Max Flood 3.58 kts @ 12:38) 6:00pm - Arrive Scituate Yacht Club (Sunset 7:58pm) Dinner, showers, etc in Scituate Weds. 4 AugustApproximately 4 hour cruise from Scituate YC across Mass Bay to Marblehead. The J/30s will have moorings courtesy of Boston YC for the J/30 North American Championship. Others will need to coordinate with the harbormaster for moorings or reservations at the town dock. Thurs 5 Aug - Sun 8 AugJ/30 North American Championship (registration stuff on Thurs). Plenty of parties and events in Marblehead. Recreation event tickets will be available for the NAs for those who want to party with us. Pam & Larry Titus will have Dream Boat there as the official party platform. Monday 9 AugustDepart Marblehead - Rhapsody plans a straight through trip back to Newport, but others may want to stop at places along the way. In order to catch the favorable currents, depart Marblehead @5am Monday. Be at Mass Bay side of Cape Cod Canal 11:25am-1:25pm to maximize SOG with current (Max Ebb 4.5 kts @ 12:25pm) Let's get some feedback on places to go, who's joining up and logistics for cars between Newport & Marblehead too. I've got tracks in my GPS from a 2007 cruise that we can share and modify as required.

Falcons leaving Barrington on Sunday and will probably end up either at 3rd beach or Cutty Sunday night so it will be no big deal to be at the Canal Tuesday morning @ 11:30 (were are you planning on spending Monday night ?) so we can run thru and end up in Scituate YC with you. If you're booking a spot add us to the list
On the return Falcons going to leave right after racing and will try and get thru the canal Sunday night
Two of my crew is cruising up with me. Pat is coming up either Wednesday night or Thursday to bring back Carol. Rest of Crew will arrive on Thursday probably late in the day I'm still putting together the return crew

I've been doing some searching online and am thinking maybe Martha's Vineyard is the best place along the way to stop so we can be there on Sunday 1 August. My daughter and her friend have flexibility to take a ferry back to the mainland late Sunday. Here's the itinerary I'm thinking about - please provide feedback: Friday 30 July9:30am Depart Newport to Oak Bluffs Marthas Vineyard (slip with dock facilities and showers) - Stay through Monday Morning 2 August. Monday 2 AugustDepart Oak Bluffs and sail to Beverly Yacht Club or Barden's Boatyard in Marion, MA (on a mooring or potentially a slip - investigating available facilities) Tuesday 3 AugustDepart Marion mid morning. Target 11:30am to 1:30pm - Be at Buzzards Bay end of Cape Cod Canal to maximize SOG with current (Max Flood 3.58 kts @ 12:38) 6:00pm - Arrive Scituate Harbor Yacht Club (Sunset 7:58pm) Dinner, showers, etc in Scituate Let me know if you plan on being in Scituate Tuesday night so I can coordinate with Scituate Harbor YC for moorings Weds. 4 AugustApproximately 4 hour cruise from Scituate Harbor YC across Mass Bay to Marblehead. The J/30s will have moorings courtesy of Boston YC for the J/30 North American Championship. Others will need to coordinate with the harbormaster for moorings or reservations at the town dock at Tucker's Wharf. Someone from the Rhapsody crew will drive Bill & Cindy's car to Marblehead. Thurs 5 Aug - Sun 8 AugJ/30 North American Championship (registration stuff on Thurs). Plenty of parties and events in Marblehead. Recreation event tickets will be available for the NAs for those who want to party with us. Pam & Larry Titus will have Dream Boat there at Tucker's Wharf as the official Rhapsody party platform. Rhapsody crew has reserved rooms at Boston YC. We have one parking spot for each room. Monday 9 AugustDepart Marblehead - Rhapsody plans a straight through trip back to Newport, but others may want to stop at places along the way. In order to catch the favorable currents, depart Marblehead @5am Monday. Be at Mass Bay side of Cape Cod Canal 11:25am-1:25pm to maximize SOG with current (Max Ebb 4.5 kts @ 12:25pm)

For J/30s stopping in Marion the night of Monday August 2 on the way to Marblehead, the Beverly YC and Bill and Tinker Saltonstall are putting out the welcome mat. The YC offers moorings only on a first come first serve basis. We recommend that all J/30 visitors call BYC Launch on CH 68 when approaching the harbor. The Buzzards Bay Regatta takes place the following Fri, Sat, and Sunday, but if moorings are in short supply, we will work something out. Rafting is OK on club moorings (up to 2 boats). One boat on a mooring costs $40. Two boats: $30 each. You may anchor free, but the Harbormaster says anchored boats must have someone onboard. The launch drivers will be helpful and will provide rides between your boats and the YC. The harbor offers excellent shelter and good holding ground, but visitors are reminded to observe the channel marks. The club's showers and toilets are available around the clock. Bring your own bath towels. A general store, bookstore, gift shop, antique store, cookie shop, liquor store, several real estate offices and houses to die for are nearby, but no restaurants. All skippers and crews of J/30s are invited to a very informal cookout at Bill and Tinker Saltonstall's house at 159 Front Street, a 5 min. walk from the yacht club in the center of the village. We'll be serving mainly beer and burgers starting at 1730. Voluntary contributions to cover costs would be appreciated. Figure on catching a last launch run back to your boats before 2045. Please let us (wgsaltonstall@comcast.net) know who's coming for planning purposes. This is starting to look like a fun gathering! See you then.
