Given all the dialog, given that the association took the time to conduct a survey and to encourage further input on J/30 owner interpretation of the results of that survey, one might expect that the BOG meeting would include an agenda item to discuss main sail material

As well as .5 spin.

Most of us are PHRF ... conform to PHRF ... not some 30 year old time warp.

BOG Phone Conference Meeting Minutes:
1. Brief update by each of District Governors
SNE - Mark Rotsky reported that there are now 37 boats in the SNE district, but not all active. J/30 participation level continues to increase in district OD events. This year there were 3 tune-up regattas held to prep for the NAs. The region is growing and healthy

LIS - John McArthur reported that the district has five boats attending the NAs. A comment by Carl Sherter highlighted John's effort on getting 3 boats trailored to the NAs with John's trailer.

NNE - David Bows reported that the district hosting the NAs has brought more boats into the district and helped energize participation. There are many new participants in OD and PHRF events in the NNE district. There are 6 boats participating in the NAs from all over that are 1st time participants.

Gulf Coast - Ken Buhler reported that the district continues to grow in the post Katrina rebuild effort. The district is organizing the J/30 Midwinter regatta 26/27 Feb 2011 and will host the 2012 NAs. The NA dates will probably be in October and will be confirmed so the dates can be posted.

Chesapeake - Ron Anderson reported that preliminary planning has started with Annapolis YC for the NAs to be held 16-18 Sept 2011. Annapolis Race week will occur just before this to help draw more participants. Participation in the Chesapeake events continues to be good.

Western Great Lakes - Dell Todd reports that the Verve Cup has been the focus to get J/30 participation up. There are 3 newly refit boats from Milwaukee who plan to join the OD fleet. Another good draw was the Mackinaw race with 3 boats including doublehanded entries.

No reports from Southeast, Pacific Northwest, Carolinas, or California.

One significant note is the the California District Governor, Shawn Ivie recently placed 2nd in class in the PacCup race on Friction Loss from San Francisco to Hawaii.

2. J/30 Dues status, Web statistics and ideas for promoting class events

Bill Kneller reported that 2010 class dues have been paid by 57 members, with a better response than last`year.

Dave Erwin reported that the J/30 web site and forum logs show that the number of viewers is increasing. Recently the ISP notified us that our higher web traffic would require a $5/mos increase. The traffic is heavy on the forum and many cross posts with links on Sailing Anarchy to the class web site and forum. Video clips have kept the web traffic up.

A continued emphasis was made on getting people to submit stories and pictures from J/30 events to keep interest levels up.

3. Class Flag Offering - Dave Erwin
Class flag quotes have been obtained and a decision will be made on how best to sell these. After some discussion it was decided that flags should sell for $65 to class members and $85 to non-members. These prices should include shipping. Also discussed was using a special flag that the J/30 NA winner could fly. Ideas included a gold J/30 flag, or stars sewn on a standard flag. This will be discussed more on a forum topic.

4. J/30 Logo Merchandise Offering - Bill Kneller
The class has entered into an agreement with V-Sport, the official J/Boats licensed logo supplier. J/30 logo merchandise is available at a discount to class members not available to the general public. The J/30 merchandise is available on the J/30 menu. The password for discount is posted in the members only section of the forum.

5. Class Association finance status & overview - Carl Sherter
  • Expenses: $125 US Sailing, Awaiting $1600 bill for half hulls
  • Current Balance: $8667.36 (may be higher since more PayPal dues were received in this balance is 3 weeks old)
Carl also reported that the half-hull trophy bill for $1,600 needs to be paid. Carl indicated the Zuma, the model maker would like to establish a long term relationship with the J/30 Class to provide half-hull trophies. The BOG agreed this was a good idea. Trophies could also be made for any districts that wanted to use them. Carl will get more details and report back.

6. Report from Class Measurer - (Mast Supplier evaluation, other topics as needed) - Charlie Stoddard
Charlie gave an update on the alternate mast supplier correspondence. There were some areas that needed investigation on availability of spreaders and sheave box design. Rod Johnstone indicated that J/Boats would like to review any spar updates (mast, sheaves, boxes, etc.). We all agreed this was a good idea and Rod has offered to help the class identify alternate suppliers of parts with a goal to keep things "standard" and not incur custom tooling charges. Charlie will send Rod Johnstone information so he can review it and help the class.

Spinnakers - A continued discussion on 0.5 oz spinnaker resulted in the consensus that it brought no value for OD racing and would compel people to have both a 0.5 and 0.75 spinnaker onboard. Those who wanted to use 0.5 oz could elect to do so for PHRF events.

Main Sail Material - The discussion continued with an agreement to keep this on the forum. Recent data shows that high tech mains (e.g. Carbon) have become more cost competitive with dacron. There is the possibility for a phased cut-in similar to the introduction on unrestricted material on headsails. Rod Johnstone commented that the newer designed boats used lighter weight sails to improve handling (raising/lowering).

7. 2013 J/30 North American Location discussion & vote
The Board of Governors unanimously approved the following:
2013 - Southern New England District to host on Narragansett Bay
2014 - Long Island Sound District to host
The districts will determine dates and venue so long range planning can occur.

The BOG also discussed the possibility of the class supporting a regional event with a trophy (e.g. stern trophy). Participation in these events would be limited to current class members who paid dues.
