#3 Measurements

#3 Measurements - 02/21/19 03:23 PM

Does anyone have a full set of detailed measurements for a #3 racing jib? My sail maker is asking for a lot of information and the boat, mast and mast track (originals) are in storage.

Ummmmmm - the class rules extracted below are a pretty good source for the basics. I wouldn't start a project sail with a sailmaker who has not produced one previously. All the major sailmakers have the recipe for a good performing #3 jib that has been perfected over time..

5.12.3 Genoa (#3)

5.12.3.1 The length of the LP shall not exceed 3658 mm nor be less than 3550 mm.

5.12.3.2 One reef point may be included with a maximum height of 1220 mm along the luff from the center of the tack. Cunninghams are not permitted.

5.12.3.3 Maximum luff length is 9982 mm (32.75′).

5.12.3.4 Up to three battens are permitted between the head and the clew evenly spaced on the leech. The length, material and construction of battens are unrestricted.

Personally, I‮d steer clear of a sailmaker who puts the onus on you to provide accurate measurements on a boat that has pretty standard measurements and readily available class rules, unless you don‮t have a stock rig. Also, if you aren‮t going to race OD, I would consider a full length luff for the #3 vs. the one design max length. Shouldn‮t be a hit in phrf and also lessens the sail area gap between the #1 and #3.
