Timely needs: V-Berth and a new J2 - 05/18/20 02:24 AM

Hi All,

I've been off the forum for a while but still loving and sustaining hull 220. And I am really looking forward to the possibility of a short window of sailing it this year. Looks likely here on Lake Ontario albeit with an extraordinary effort to make it happen safely.

Tow things I'd appreciate readers' and experts' help on:

1. Does anyone have scale drawings for the V-berth cushions? Replacing these is a rare case of my wife getting solidly behind a boat project and associated spend. So I'm in too! I need electronic files that I can send to a local maker (Toronto Area).

2. Sails: So it seems we will be shorthanded for some time. Need a J2 to do that with our household crew weight of about 200 KGs. 2 in the cockpit and 1 on the rail. Your thoughts on the optimum overlap for this new sail, keeping sheeting angles in mind? What is the largest we could make it, using the OD genoa track? Can a 135% overlap work on the OD genoa track? What size did folks used to use for their #2?

What other needs do you all have -- let's solve some easy problems.

Thank you and hang well!

FYI J/Boats promptly confirmed they do not have patterns for the v-berth cushions. You need to make your own which is not difficult.

Can you take in your old cushions to get them copied?

As for the J2, ours is 140% and is a great sail for shorthanded sailing. You can get a lot of good used ones because the hardcore OD guys on the east coast rarely use them smile

Because we live in a really windy spot, and our racing at other lighter locations was done doublehanded, one year I stopped carrying a #1 altogether and had the boat rated for only the #2 (playing the PHRF game). The rating was so generous that I felt guilty because we were just as fast in 90% of conditions, but punished the fleet with our handicap.

I am due for a new #2. I just spent 10 days cruising and that is all we used.
