Rotten bulkhead

Rotten bulkhead - 08/04/21 10:53 PM

I installed new chainplates today. On the forward starboard side the wood is fairly rotten. When I tightened down the bolts is compressed the back material by about 1/4". I used my old chainplates as backing plates. In another post I saw that the bulkhead is composed of "veneer, approximately 1 inch fiberglass (maybe thicker), 1/4 inch plywood, liner". It seems most of the structure is in the 1" fiberglass. How concerning is the rotten wood? I'll likely replace it this winter, but plan on launching her this week.

Sorry for starting another thread on this, there seems to be many. But I don't see the logic in worrying about 1/4" of plywood when there is an 1" of fiberglass for structure.

Read my Rhapsody blog in this post and finish with this post.

You want to make sure the bulkhead can handle the tension from the chainplates under load.
