Tuff-Luff Aero foil - 03/29/07 03:03 PM

Has anyone ordered a new Tuff Luff Aero-foil for their boat? If so, what is the correct model? Any special info needed?

I'm about to order the same system. It appears the 1706 is for a 5/16" headstay. I thought the J30 has a 1/4" headstay, right?

Also, does it simply come as a kit or do I need to supply measurements prior to ordering?

I just ordered and installed the 1706 from P-Yacht at the price listed above. All good-the luff groove size is the key, not the headstay size. The 1706 accomodates a MAX headstay diam. of 5/16"-1/4" works fine. Check your luff tape size-#6 requires the 1706.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone used or considered the Harken Carbo Foil option? I've used Tuff Luff foils for years. I know very little about the Harken product. If one is to believe their marketing, it sounds like a compelling alternative at a very similar price.

Thanks,

I am with Jeff and want to try the Harken Carbofoil.

Mr. Class Measurer, any problems with this regarding class legality?

For what its worth, the Head Foil system is lighter than both Harkens Carbo Foil and the Tuff Luff. Tuff Luff being the heaviest by far.

Two things to keep in mind when ordering a headfoil. The number 5 or 6 refers to the size of luff tape your sail maker put on your headsails. The J30 class rules state that the the head foil can not exceed 31mm (1.2 Inches) for and aft.

The Harken Foil for a number 5 Luf tape is legal at 1.1 inches. I do not know the dimensions for the #6.

I installed a Harken Carbo Racing Foil on my J-30 last weekend. I installed the 7001.12 model. It takes a #6 luff line which my sails have on them. The Harken Compu-spec web site recommended a 7000.12 unit and said I would have to have my luff tape replaced with #5 Luff tape. I contacted Harken and they said that the 7001.12 foil would work. I measured the foil width and it is 1 - 5/16" wide which I believe is just a bit too wide to meet current class specs. I race PHRF so I don't care.
