SNE District 2013 Annual Meeting - Thurs 28 Feb - 01/14/13 01:20 PM

Happy New Year all J/30 sailors,

I want to take this opportunity to invite you to our annual winter meeting on February, 28th at the Marine Museum at 70 Water St., Fall River, Ma. Doors will be open at 6:30 and the meeting will start at 7:00

At the meeting we will go over the usual class business, election of District officers (Looking for volunteers) as well as the 2013 race schedule and cruising opportunities for our district.

J/30 North American Championship at home in 2013

The big news, in case you haven't heard, is that the upcoming 2013 J/30 North American Championship will be held in our district. The Barrington Yacht Club will be the host and race headquarters, headed by our Class Chief Measurer, Charlie Stoddard as the Regatta Chair. The actual racing venue will be in the vicinity of Ohio Ledge in Upper Narragansett Bay. This is where we so successfully ran the NA's in 2000, 2004, and 2008. The regatta will be held during the last weekend in July, starting with registration on Thursday, the 25th, and ending with the awards ceremonies on Sunday, the 28th.

The website for the regatta is already up and running at http://j30.us/na2013/ . This year we have provided the convenience of pre-registering for $50.00 (Which applies towards your ultimate regatta fee). We already have 6 boats registered. Check out the site and you will see that we are well along in our preparations for the best regatta yet.

We need your help!
We need help from racers, cruisers and friends of the J/30 class to host a successful event. I tell you all this now because you can actually help us greatly with the regatta planning even this far in advance by letting us know your initial intentions relative to participation in the regatta. Yes, it's early for this, but the more we know, the better we can plan. So what I am asking of you now is to give some thought to the regatta and get back to me with what you think your level of participation will be with it. Hopefully by seeing how well the planning has started, knowing the great experiences of past regattas at this location, and just having this much notice for it, you would be inclined to participate in the regatta with your boat and crew. But you can also participate in other ways. One great way, especially for those new to J/30's, racing in general, or on a tight budget, would be to offer your boat as a loaner for those crews in other distant districts who want to race here but find that bringing their boats here would be too difficult or expensive. This way, they typically pay the entry fees and all other expenses that go with the event, they may help prep your boat, and most times you and some of your crew sail the regatta with them. There are any number of loaner arrangements that you can work out, and no two are alike, but it's done all the time and the class organizers would be glad to help with suggestions on how to make a loaner work. But for right now, we would just like to know if there is interest in this. This regatta is called the North Americans for a reason, and in the past we have had successful loaners available for crews from Canada, the Midwest, the West coast, and the Caribbean. There is also a large contingent of J/30 racers from the lower Atlantic states who have utilized loaners in the past and even won the regattas with them. So there is a real need for loaners. Again, the sooner we know what is available, the better the experience will be.

We will be providing food (probably pizza) and beverages at the meeting. Feel free to bring your crew to and PLEASE RSVP with the number of people who will be attending so we can make sure we have enough food and drink. Also, a $5.00 - $10.00 donation would be appreciated for the Museum

I'm looking forward to seeing you at the annual meeting and starting the ball rolling into another successful racing season in 2013.

Wishing you a safe and successful new year,
Mark Rotsky
J/30 Class Southern New England District Governor
