2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 09/25/08 10:40 AM

The 2009 J/30 North Americans will be held at the Cedar Point YC in Wesport CT the last weekend in September. Stay tuned for more details as John McArthur and Carl Sherter work to organize this with the other J/30s home based at Cedar Point. I believe the dates are 25-27 September 2009 but we must get confirmation from CPYC. Only 365 days and counting!

2-4 October 2009 at Cedar Point YC

I just spoke with John McArthur and confirmed the dates for the 2009 J/30 North American Championship. The dates are 2-4 October 2009 at Cedar Point YC - Westport, CT. There will be a web site generated with information. Once the web site goes live, a link will be available from the J/30 home page.

Re: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 05/11/09 01:24 AM

John McArthur won a cage-match over Halsey Bullen, so instead of tactician on Laser Beam I will be PRO this year. Now that I live in Tampa, I will be bringing a team of heavyweights (pun intended) from Davis Island YC to staff the RC.

As of this week the NOR is in Draft 2, hopefully to be public by the end of this month. I have added October 1 to the schedule, for practice racing with RC. This means the RC will be practicing, and if J-30s come out to play they are welcome!

Eric,

We'll miss you as a competitor, but glad to see you on the race course.

Hope you're getting to sail Lasers down at Davis Island.

Does anyone have any info on boat launching and hauling for the NA's?

Re: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 05/31/09 11:57 PM

Luke - I spoke to John McArthur last week. CPYC is putting in a new crane - I think he said 5 ton capacity. John expects it to be operational in August. John indicated that he expected to post some 2009 NA logistics info soon, so stay tuned.

Re: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 06/16/09 12:34 AM

I'm in favor of the discussion about the 2010 NA's and support Davids hard work planning the venue.
I also think we need a discussion about the 2009 NA's at Cedar Point - who is coming for sure and maybe? Who needs help transporting the boat - Fuzzy Wuzzy's trailer will most likely be available, I think Smiles trailer may also be available. What can we do to beat the 23 boat regatta we had last year???
IMHO - for the future well being (growth) of the class we need to put as many boats as possible on the line for the National events and let the rest of the world know.
In 2006 I don't think we had any boats from NNE at Cedar Point - will that change this year?? Will all the good boats from the Chesapeake come this year??
It is not my intention to step on any toes - just to get a discussion going and hopefully build some interest for this years NA.
BTW Fuzzy Wuzzy will be there./Bengt Johansson

Rhapsody is definitely in for 2009 NAs and delivering by water the weekend before. I'm arm twisting the Southern New England District to get more folks committed to participating.

Re: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 06/16/09 04:30 AM

Blue Meanie is in for 2009, and unless something terrible happens, 2010 as well. The trip by water from the NE region is full of potential stopovers, and plenty of safe havens ( I can't say the same for the trip from Raritan to Annapolis and back over water-been there, done that. Twice. Ouch.) If we draw all the Cedar Point active boats, three Raritan boats, a few travelers from Annapolis, and a contingent of NE boats trying to build support for the '10 NA's, we ought to have a strong fleet this year. From the NE (besides Evelyn)-Arbella, DBows, Falcon, anyone else...who will make the trip?

As I see it:

Annapolis:

Bebop
White Boat?
Big Kahuna

Raritan

Fuzzy Wuzzy
Blue Meanie
Belle Faster

Mass/RI

DBows (boat name)?
Arbella?
Evelyn
Rhapsody
Falcon?

New Orleans

Zephyr 2.0 (loaner)
Jalapeno?

Western LIS

Pale Rider
Kinsale?
Excalibur?

Cedar Point

Smiles
Forever and Always
Dow Jones
Fat City
Helium?
Bad Dog

Anyone else? How about Better Mousetrap? Good News? Anyone?

Re: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 06/16/09 10:55 AM

Add to MA / RI candidates
Good News (probably offered as a loaner)
Nemesis
Karinosa
Viva?
Wicked? (new owners 323)
Valkyrie? (used to race)
Jeanie (CT)
Keltic Knot
Mithral
Frolic

I think the CA folks crew may do a combined crew like last year too. I was speaking with Donna Polk Eggemoggin. They now have three J/30s in Marina Del Rey.

From LIS - what about:
Triple Play
High Heels
Boadicea
Ferriation
KNOT PHRFect (New owners on Hudson)

Corey Glynn "Hijinx" said he may trailer from Ontario

Re: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 06/16/09 12:54 PM

another idea is to let boats enter the competition and pay later....
That's how they did it in BIRW and it gave a big turn out....
Or at least have the option of seeing who is coming for sure /maybe /not

btw. Pale Rider is in..

I heard a rumour that Triple Play may indeed put in an appearance.

Re: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 06/22/09 06:55 PM

The 2009 North American at Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport CT Website will be up in early July. The final revisions are be made to the NOR and entry form. Cedar Point is also negotiating some special pricing at a newly renovated local Hotel and will past the information along as soon as is available.

Ceder Point has order an 5-ton capacity jib crane and plans are to have it installed in the second week of August. With the new crane CPYC will be able to launch out of town J30s on their own trailers. Launching fees should be modest (below commercial rates). More details to follow. It's still a work in progress.

Loaners! A limited number of Loaners will be available. Please contact me ASAP if you are considering a Loaner. Rumors have it that there are already some private loaner deals made. Please confirm if a out of towns have made the own deal. Any local LIS J30 skipper interested in loaning the boat please let me know.

Add a few more LIS prospectives to the list;
Special Sauce, Fayerweather YC, Bridgeport
Bluejacket, CPYC
Youthful Indiscretion, CPYC

John McArthur, '09 NAs Regatta Chair, J30 Class co-president.

PS, Good Luck to Pale Rider a BIRW. WHK those were some wild predictions!

Yeah - I know. I took the horses with 50 to 1 odds in many of the classes. Hasn't worked out too well though...

John, as I said in my previous email to you and Carl, J.Doe will be looking for a loaner, and I will need a class legal jib so as soon as you know let me know... the sailmaker needs a little runup time. Thanks. Cyn

Even though I am a lowly bowman and my presence here is certainly unwelcome I know that Laser Beam (192) has had the event on our calendar since it was announced last September. That's 1 more CPYC boat.

Possible two from Eastern Great Lakes - Crusader and Blaze

What's the story on Launching ? Cost of trailering and Launch fee is an issue .

Let us know

Re: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 07/08/09 12:57 PM

Dan,
Cedar Point will have a brand New 5-ton crane and hoist installed prior to the NAs in October. The crane is scheduled to be installed the week of August 10th. Rates have not been determined, but like I said in a previous posting the will be well below any commercial marina. I should have a definite price by August. I can't imagine the price to be more that $200. in and out. There's a good chance it will be allot less.

Facilities: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 08/24/09 01:35 AM

I sailed with the Smiles crew today at CPYC and saw other CPYC J/30 owners there. To help entice people to register, I've attached a picture of the new 5 ton crane that is J/30 lift capable, and a picture of the clubhouse and RC boat.

These are great facilities to host the 2009 J/30 North Americans. Please sign up now!

Re: Facilities: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 08/24/09 02:33 AM

Bill,

I assume we are hoisting with Straps under the hull and not a bridle.

Has it been tested with a J30 ?

Does anyone have info on trailering a J/30 in CT ?

From the website it appears that a Permit is not needed as the width dimension for CT DOT is 16 feet. Can anyone confirm ?

Thanks Dan Mather

Re: Facilities: 2009 J/30 North Americans at Cedar Point YC - 08/24/09 02:57 AM

Dan - The best person to answer these questions is John McArthur. John trailers his boat and knows the CT regulations. He is also the person who coordinated the installation of the crane at CPYC. I was just a visitor today sailing on Smiles and took some pictures!

Re: Swag Order: 2009 J/30 North Americans - 09/08/09 12:53 PM

So far this is looking like a very low turnout year-does anybody know of other boats planning to participate that are not registered yet? Rumor has it that Zephyr and Big Kahuna are coming-any others?

What about:

Kinsale
Evelyn
Nemesis
Bad Dog
Excalibur

Re: Swag Order: 2009 J/30 North Americans - 09/08/09 01:36 PM

Nemesis isn't coming. I've asked Mark if he'll join the Rhapsody crew, and he's gotta check with the boss. I don't think Evelyn is coming either, but I think Luke is coming to CPYC to help with measurement. Zephyr and Big Kahuna are in, based on conversations I've had with Dave & Larry.

Re: Swag Order: 2009 J/30 North Americans - 09/09/09 06:45 PM

I have promises from Pale Rider and Special Sauce. Big Kahuna has confirmed and may be the only boat coming from the Chesapeake. I have not heard from either Kinsale or Excalibur. What about Bella Faster from Raritan? That gives a total of 15. I was hoping to top out at over twenty, but that dose not look possible at this time. There may be one more boat from Cedar Point. I'm sure the tough economic times has allot to do with it. I was hoping to get more entries from both New England districts, so far there is only one boat making the trip. Is there any J30 we're missing?
