Is anyone using a strop between the top block of the main sheet and boom to reduce the length of the mainsheet to speed mark roundings?

Probably not. Since it is not included in J/30 Class Rule 5.4 or 5.9 as a permitted alteration or addition, in my opinion it would not be legal.

Is a strop like a pennant?
5.9.2.2 prohibits pennants

It seems strange since we are not limited in purchase for the mainsheet and it is similar in a sense that it gives back sheeting speed that you loose by going to a more powerful purchase. You can effectivley remove the additional length of sheet added by the additional purchase. David #397

In theory as a single source one-design the J/30 has equipment as originally specified by J/Boats. If all boats look the same, it's easy for any class member to step aboard or glance at another boat and say 'that's a J/30'. Our class rules and specs have slowly evolved, sometimes out of necessity, often as desired by class members. The familiar way is to propose and pass a change. Another, which was more prevalent in the early years, was through general acceptance or ambivalence about different equipment or rigging either supplied by J/Boats or in use by class members. Where interpretations were based on the 'prohibited unless permitted' notion of rule 1 and 1.3, they were occasionally added as rules. That's the case with 5.9.2.2, which was added 1/1/1994, but was an accepted interpretation long before that. I'd say it's mostly due to the fact that few boats had mainsheet pennants and where they did it was easy enough to ask that they be removed.

Thanks Bob. That is nice clarification. And not that I really think this is a big issue, because it is not, but I am curious why specifically pennants are called out. As to the fact they are easy to remove, this is true, but they are also easy to add and inexpensive so what was the reasoning behind the explicit rule limiting them? Are they more benificial than I think, or was there some juicy dust-up about someone using them before getting clarification if they were legal?

Have someone make you a 14 to 18 inch piece of spectra with a loop on each end. Then pass the strop between the boom and the mainsheet bail and take one end of the strop and pass it through the loop on the other end. This will secure one end to the bail. Then attach the block that was on the bail to the other loop on the strop. That is it. Oh and cut down your mainsheet.
