Running Rigging
This is a table originally put together by a rigger in Annapolis for one of the J/30 owners. Most of the values should be close to what was on the boats when they were originally shipped. Of course, many of these dimensions will be different depending on how the controls are rigged (e.g. how your boat’s backstay control is led and how many parts you have on the block and tackle). So, don’t take these as gospel, just a useful starting point.
Halyards | Length | Diameter | Details |
Main | 102 | 3/8″ | Originally 55 ft of 3/8″ rope + 47 ft of 3/16″ wire. On Mondial, I’m using 5/16″ Technora cored line. |
Jib | 81 | 3/8″ | Originally 48 ft of 3/8″ rope and 33 ft of 5/32″ wire. On Mondial, I’m using 5/16″ Technora cored line. |
Spinnaker | 81 | 3/8″ | We’re using one of the blended core lines @ 5/16″ diameter |
Pole Lift | 54 | 3/8″ | |
Sheets | |||
Main | 100 | 3/8″ | |
Jib | 45 | 7/16″ | One of the “fuzzy” braid lines is easier on the hands |
Spinnaker | 60 | 3/8″ or 5/16″ | We’re using one of the blended core lines here to reduce stretch. It makes an amazing difference |
Light air spinnaker | 60 | 3/16″ or 5/32″
Control Lines | |||
Foreguy | 65 | 5/16″ | If double-ended |
Backstay | 44 | 5/16″ | We’re actually using 1/4″ line because it’s double-ended to either side of the cockpit. |
Traveler | 2 @ 20 | 5/16″ or 3/8″ | Ours is a single length of line, with eyes at each end to make it easier to trip the lazy side of the traveler line |
Boom Vang | 26 | 3/8″ | When we went to the Boomkicker, we kept the old soft vang, but added a doubling plate at the mast end and then used about 5′ of Spectron and a wire block to double the purchase to 12:1. |
Outhaul | 35 | 3/8″ | |
Cunningham | 25 | 5/16″ or 1/4″
Flattener | 34 | 3/8″ | |
Reef Lines | 34 | 3/8″ | |
Twings | 2 @ 18 | 1/4″ | We’re using Yale Light since the twings are kept in a locker except for races and don’t pick up water when they droop down. |
Standing Rigging
Stay | Length | Diameter | Details |
Upper Shrouds | 34′ 7 1/2″ | 1/4″ | T Ball to Turnbuckle |
Lower Shrouds | 17′ 2 3/4″ | 1/4″ | T Ball to Turnbuckle |
Forestay | 35′ 8″ | 1/4″ | Marine Eye to Turnbuckle – Max. Head stay length is 35’10 1/2″ measured to the Sheer Line at the bow stem fitting.(rule 5.8.2.1). The measurement listed is pin-to-pin of the stay. |
Backstay – upper | 37′ 10 1/4″ | 3/16″ | Marine Eye to Fork – The original length of the back stay was 38’2 1/4″. We shortened it 4″ to get more adjustment in it. This is a common modification to the J/30’s. |
Backstay – lower | 8′ 3 3/4″ | 3/16″ | Fork to Turnbuckle |
